Elias James Manning

Elias James Manning OFMConv (born April 14, 1938 in Troy , † October 13, 2019 in Vassouras , Brazil ) was an American clergyman and bishop of Valença .

Life

Elias James Manning joined the religious order of the Minorites in 1958 , accepted the religious name Elias and was ordained a priest on October 30, 1965 after his theological training, including at the Archdiocesan Seminary of St. Joseph in Rio de Janeiro . As a priest he worked in Pontalina, the state of Goiás, and in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in the cities of Araruama and in the state capital. He was also the provincial administrator of his order.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Valença on March 14, 1990 . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and Ordinarius for the Byzantine faithful in Brazil , Eugênio Cardinal de Araújo Sales , on May 13th of the same year; The co- consecrators were José Fernandes Veloso , Bishop of Petrópolis , and Carlos Alberto Etchandy Gimeno Navarro , Archbishop of Niterói . As a motto he chose Tu summum bonum es .

From 2004 to 2007 he was a member of the Pastoral Bishops 'Commission for Biblical-Catechetical Education in the National Bishops' Conference of Brazil (CNBB). Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on February 12, 2014.
