The Elisabeth-Gymnasium in Halle (Saale) is a state-approved high school for boys and girls sponsored by the Edith Stein School Foundation of the Diocese of Magdeburg . The school participates in the MINT program , the Comenius program and is a participating school of the Junior Engineer Academy .
history
After students professing their faith in the Catholic Church in state schools were exposed to repression for decades during National Socialism and the subsequent communism , Catholic parents demanded that schools be set up in the GDR as part of the reunification of the GDR . In March 1991, the concrete preparations for the establishment of the grammar school, which was named after St. Elisabeth of Thuringia , began. After controversial discussions in the population and difficult negotiations with the city of Halle, school rooms in House 47 of the Francke Foundations could first be moved into. Classes began on September 2, 1991, so the first school year was the 1991/1992 school year. The school was initially run by the Magdeburg Episcopal Office . The first director was from 1991 to summer 1993 Sister Helene Schöpper († 2009), who retired in 1990 after leading the Marienschule in Lippstadt , also a church high school, for decades . Now the director is Mr. Mingenbach (Mingi).
In April 1997, the grammar school moved into its own new building, which was built according to plans by the architect Wilfried Ziegemeier († 2013). On January 1, 2003, the sponsorship of the school was transferred from the Diocese of Magdeburg, which had arisen in 1994 from the Episcopal Office of Magdeburg, to the Edith Stein School Foundation founded at that time by the Magdeburg Bishop Leo Nowak . At the beginning of 2016 a calisthenic machine was inaugurated in the school yard. In the following year, the school yard was further equipped with several seating options.
