Eluru ( Telugu : ఏలూరు; formerly Anglicized Ellore ) is a city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh .

It is the administrative center of the West Godavari district and has around 214,000 inhabitants (2011 census). Eluru is located on the national highway NH 16 (formerly NH 5 ) between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam and on the important Kolkata - Chennai railway line . The nearest airport is in Gannavaram, 40 kilometers away .

The Kolleru Lake , a 245 square kilometer large freshwater lake, is located near the city.

In historical times the place was called Helapuri and had a rich cultural and political history; once it is said to have been the capital of the Eastern Dekkan Empire of the Vishnukundina dynasty.

Eluru has been the bishopric of the Roman Catholic diocese of Eluru since 1976 . Since April 2005 Eluru has the status of a municipal corporation .
