The Emden (F 210) was a Bremen- class frigate of the German Navy . She was the fifth ship to be named after the East Frisian city of Emden in a German Navy . Predecessors in its name were two small cruisers of the Imperial Navy from 1908 and 1916 , the light cruiser Emden of the Reich and later Navy , as well as the frigate Emden of the Cologne class . The Emden was put on keel at Thyssen Nordseewerke in Emden on June 23, 1980 , and was launched on December 17, 1980. It was put into service on October 7, 1983. The decommissioning took place on November 29, 2013. On August 1, 2018, the German Navy announced that the second corvette from the second construction lot of the Braunschweig class would be given the traditional name Emden .
Calls
The frigate Emden was the flagship of DESEX 1/94 in the South Atlantic (see Henning Bess ) and took part in several missions abroad , including in June 1996 in Operation Sharp Guard , in Operation Enduring Freedom (2002, 2006, 2008) and from 18. October to November 6, 2006 in Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 on Operation Active Endeavor .
From February 12 to July 8, 2008, the frigate was part of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Horn of Africa . On April 21, 2008, the on- board helicopter drove away pirates who attacked the Japanese oil tanker Takayama off the Somali coast . The helicopter had been sent out to assist after the Emden intercepted an emergency call from the tanker. On the night of April 23-24, 2008, the Emden gave the sailing ship Star Clipper escort when several suspicious speedboats approached.
In the first half of 2009, again as part of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 , the Emden planned a longer trip abroad , which was to lead to Australia. In the course of the seafaring, it was necessary to pass the sinking point of the first Emden . However, this did not happen, as the Emden was ordered to Operation Atalanta after passing the Suez Canal .
Since January 2010, the frigate took part in Operation Atalanta for the second time. On May 19, 2010 she was replaced by Schleswig-Holstein .
After participating in the deployment and training association in 2013, Emden returned to Wilhelmshaven and was taken out of service on June 15, 2013.
On November 29, 2013, frigate captain Hendrik Hülsmann decommissioned the frigate in Wilhelmshaven.

Trivia
Traditionally, the Emden wore - like its predecessors in German naval history - an iron cross as decoration, in this case on the bridge front. It was a reminder of the extraordinary achievements of the small cruiser Emden during the First World War in 1914.
The cross is now on loan in Australia.
