Emil Ilse

Emil Ilse (born March 14, 1864 in Kempfeld ; † April 14, 1943 in Cologne ) was a German artillery general .

Life

On April 14, 1883, Ilse joined the Lower Saxony Foot Artillery Regiment No. 10 of the Prussian Army in Strasbourg as a second lieutenant . From October 1, 1885 to September 30, 1887 he graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School . As Prime Lieutenant (from April 17, 1890) he was commanded from October 1, 1890 to July 21, 1893 at the War Academy . At the same time as he was promoted to captain on September 14, 1893, he was appointed company commander in his main regiment. From March 19, 1896, Ilse acted as an adjutant to the General Inspectorate of the Foot Artillery and was initially commanded from July 2 to August 17, 1896 to the General Staff , where he was then transferred.

In the further course of his military career, Ilse became a major general on October 1, 1912, commander of the 5th foot artillery brigade in Cologne . He led this large association on the western front with the outbreak of the First World War . On August 20, 1914, he gave up this post and became chief of the artillery of the 2nd Army under Colonel General Karl von Bülow . Just a month later he joined the 4th Army under Albrecht Duke von Württemberg and acted as chief of staff here. In this function, Ilse was promoted to lieutenant general on August 18, 1915 and was awarded the order Pour le Mérite on August 28, 1916 . On May 24, 1917 he was released from his post and appointed General Command of the XV. Army Corps appointed. From October 30, 1917, the corps was in the Reims area and was referred to as the "Brimont Group". At the beginning of the Third Battle of the Aisne , the "Ilse Group" formed the right wing of the 1st Army . On July 15, 1918, Ilse's troops tried in vain to break through during the “Reims – Marneschutz” attack between Berry-au-Bac and Brimont and had to retreat to the Aisne .

After the Armistice of Compiègne he led his troops back home and was released from military service in 1919 at his own request.

On 27 August 1939 the so-called Tannenbergtag , Ilse received the character as General of Artillery awarded.
