Angel of the Universe (Original title: Englar Alheimsins ) is an Icelandic film drama from 2000 by director Friðrik Þór Friðriksson with Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson in the lead role.

action

Paul lives with his parents in the Icelandic capital Reykjavík . He paints oil paintings, plays the drums and tells imaginative stories. He is happy with his new love Dagny, who comes from better backgrounds. When his girlfriend's snobbish mother finds out that Paul's father is just a simple taxi driver, she urges her daughter to end the relationship. After Dagny broke up, Paul fell into a deep hole, stopped painting and had constant headaches. When he goes to a doctor, he cannot find any physical causes and suspects that his heart, i.e. his lovesickness, is the cause. After his condition deteriorated and he always behaves strangely, he is in the psychiatric hospital admitted Kleppur. There he meets Viktor, who thinks he is Hitler , as well as Peter, who believes he has a doctorate on Schiller in China , and Oli, who claims to have written all the titles for the Beatles and sent them to them by telepathy . However, they believe that even a real Jesus would be put in an asylum these days .

After a while he is released from the institution, but has to take medication. After a relapse he is brought back in and immobilized there with strong drugs. The doctor diagnoses him with schizophrenia , but explains at the same time that it is deeply rooted in the culture of the Icelanders, as they also believe in mythical creatures such as elves and trolls . However, Paul holds NATO responsible, as Iceland joined NATO on the day he was born.

Peter escapes from the institution and kills himself. Paul, Oli and Viktor go out to attend Peter's funeral, but instead go to a fine restaurant and order what they want without paying later. They are brought back to the institution by the police. In the meantime, Paul's best friend Rögnvald has killed himself, but as a healthy and successful dentist, he led an apparently happy life. Paul is released from the institution and moves into a council flat in a run-down high-rise building, from where one day he jumps down and kills himself.

Reviews

"Unusually dreary film that barely allows hope and thereby undermines his concern to give the 'crazy' an authorization alongside the 'normal'."

"With bilious humor and without the consolation of an explanation, director Fridrik Thór Fridriksson tells of the madness until madness and reality also blur for the viewer."

"The film is split into two levels, into a constantly changing picture puzzle in which the unreal is concretized as real, and the real image always also encloses unreality."

“Outside, people believe in the happy goings-on of elves and trolls - at least 52.3 percent of Iceland's residents - while in Kleppi the inmates are isolated with their very own beliefs and beliefs. A hair-raising injustice - somehow the director of the institution knows that too. "

- Wolfgang Müller - The daily newspaper

“This time Fridriksson has transferred the pagan symbolism into a Christian imagery. Paul walks across the water, at night the Savior himself appears to him in a mimesis of the Michelangelo fresco of the creation of man. Blessed are the sick of heart. [..] Nobody is clearer about the connection between madness and society than the madmen themselves. 'Angel of the Universe' is a powerful plea for anti-psychiatry, which in its lawsuit against isolation is aimed at Iceland and at the same time points beyond it . "

- Philipp Bühler - Berliner Zeitung
