Engelbert Kolland

Engelbert Kolland (born September 21, 1827 in Ramsau in Tyrol ; † July 10, 1860 in Damascus ) was an Austrian Franciscan and martyr .

Life

He was baptized Michael on September 22nd, 1827 in the parish church of Zell am Ziller . In 1847 he entered the Franciscan monastery in Salzburg , where he was given the religious name Engelbert. He studied in Schwaz , Hall , Kaltern and Bozen and took solemn religious vows on November 22nd, 1850. On July 13, 1851, he was ordained a priest in Trento by Archbishop Johann Nepomuk von Tschiderer .

Mainly because of his excellent language skills, he was sent to the Orient as a missionary in 1855. He traveled via Trieste , Alexandria and Jaffa to Jerusalem , where he arrived on April 17th. On September 8th, he was transferred to the Damascus monastery .

In 1860 there were massacres of the Christian minority in Damascus, during which the mission station Kollands von Druze was attacked. He was murdered on the night of July 9th to 10th along with seven confreres and three Maronite lay people.

On October 10, 1926 he was together with the other ten victims of Pope Pius XI. beatified .
