Enno von Rintelen

Enno Emil von Rintelen (born November 6, 1891 in Stettin , † August 7, 1971 in Heidelberg ) was a German officer , most recently a general of the infantry during the Second World War .

Life

He came from an old Herford councilor family and was the son of the Prussian lieutenant general Wilhelm Rintelen (1855-1938), who was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility in 1913 , and Hedwig Russell (1865-1953). Rintelen married Ernina Boy-Keßler (born April 23, 1897 in Stettin; † February 5, 1988 in Heidelberg) on ​​June 9, 1920 in Stettin, the daughter of the Prussian major Harry von Keßler and Elsbeth Rückforth, the adopted daughter of Franziska Boy. The couple had a daughter and a son.

Rintelen joined the Prussian Army and was promoted to Fahnenjunker on September 18, 1910 and to lieutenant on January 27, 1912 . During the First World War he served in various troop formations at the front, most recently as captain since October 18, 1918 . He received both classes of the Iron Cross .

After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr . Rintelen u. a. in the General Staff of Group Command 2 in Kassel and with the staff of the 2nd Cavalry Division . On December 1, 1933, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and battalion commander, and from October 1, 1935, he was transferred to the Wehrmacht Academy as a colonel .

From October 1, 1936, Rintelen was deployed as a military attaché in Rome . After the beginning of the Second World War, he was appointed on April 20, 1940 with the rank of major general (promotion on June 1, 1939) to the authorized German general at the headquarters of the Italian armed forces . On June 1, 1941, he was appointed lieutenant general and on July 1, 1942, infantry general. Rintelen was transferred to the Führer Reserve on September 1, 1943 ; Rudolf Toussaint became his successor. On December 31, 1944, Rintelen retired and was awarded the German Cross in Silver.
