Erasmus Monitor is a German blog that closely observes the jihadist scene and focuses on German Salafists and jihadists .

Goal setting

The journalistic-scientific blog was created in December 2014 as a project by the South German political scientist Heiner Vogel. Vogel explained the objective in the magazine of Exit Deutschland , a government-sponsored dropout program for right-wing extremists , to derive connections between the Salafism scene and jihad. The name of the project is intended to recall one of the most important humanists of the Renaissance, Erasmus of Rotterdam . As a writer, he repeatedly turned against the Church and at the same time pleaded for peace and religious freedom . The blog arose from a student project during Vogel's master's degree that tried to find out why young people are pulling into jihad.

In line with its self-portrayal, the blog focuses on “ observing and describing the origins and characteristics of militant Salafism” . In doing so, he differentiates between the individual actors and groups in the scene in Europe, the Middle East and Chechnya .
