The parish church of the divine savior (in common parlance " Church of the Redeemer ") is one of the three Roman Catholic parish churches in the Austrian market town of Lustenau . The associated parish Lustenau-Rheindorf belongs to the Dornbirn deanery of the Feldkirch diocese . The church is a listed building .

location

The Erlöserkirche is located in the Rheindorf district of the Lustenau community. The cemetery adjoins its east side, while the parish center and parsonage stand on the north side . There is a small forecourt between the main portal on the western side of the building and the street.

history

At the end of the 19th century it became foreseeable that in view of the strong population growth in Lustenau, a parish church would not be enough. As early as 1897, the pastor of the then only church in Lustenau expressed the wish for a second church in the northern part of the community in a sermon. At the same time, the initiative to build the St. Antonius Chapel arose in the southernmost parcel of Wiesenrain .

A specially established church building fund was used to collect the sum necessary for the construction until the end of the First World War and part of the subsequent building site was already acquired. However, inflation destroyed about half of the collected capital, only a partial amount invested in Swiss francs was retained and served as the financial basis for a new start in 1927 when the Rheindorfer Kirchenbauverein was founded.

On July 26, 1933, the building committee unanimously decided to build the shell according to the plans of the architects Willibald Braun from Bregenz and Emanuel Thurnher from Dornbirn . Pastor Gebhard Baldauf broke ground on August 15 of the same year, and the laying of the foundation stone was celebrated on November 12 in the presence of Bishop Sigismund Waitz .

From Christmas Eve 1935 on, services were celebrated in the Church of the Redeemer on Sundays and public holidays. On October 22, 1939, Bishop Paulus Rusch consecrated the still unplastered church. The Second World War prevented further completion of the building for the next few years. The Way of the Cross was only introduced in 1947 and an organ was built in 1948. Finally, in 1952 - 17 years after the first mass was celebrated - the church was plastered.

The pastor Josef Marte, appointed in 1970, implemented two major building projects right at the beginning of his term of office: in 1971 the lower church was greatly upgraded through renovations, and from 1972–1974 a parish center was built between the church and the rectory on the site of the old congregation hall.

A fundamental renovation of the church carried out in 1986 was accompanied by a violent and sometimes very emotional and polemical argument about the way of the renovation. A smoldering fire in the roof structure on December 10th of that year almost destroyed the project, but it came to a happy conclusion on December 21st with the consecration of the altar.

Exterior description

Portal figure of the Archangel Michael with sword and balance scale

The Church of the Redeemer is basically basilical . The high central nave has a gable roof, the side aisles have hipped roofs and coupled slender arched windows. The choir ends with a semicircular apse , a three-storey sacristy is attached to the south of the choir. The 40 m high church tower with a round arch hall and a flat gable end stands at the southwest corner of the building. A vestibule with a three-axis arched arcade is built into the facade on the west side. Above the arches are figures of the Archangel Michael as a weigher of souls and of which the blessed and the damned mounted left and right, the 1953 by sculptor Bregenz to 1955 Gehrer Emil were created. There is a round window above . On the outside of the apse, the sgraffito Erlöser by the artist Leo Sebastian Humer, dated 1952, looks out onto the cemetery, the writing underneath "I am the resurrection and the life" is by Markus Bachmann.

Inside description

Inside, the church represents a hall. The high central nave has a seven-bay wooden ceiling, the straight side aisles have a pent roof. The lower church is located under the raised choir as a separate room accessible from the outside. The choir gallery in the rear part of the church is supported by a wooden beam ceiling.

Furnishing

Principals

The copper work on the tabernacle by Josef Baumgartner from 1935 shows the Adoration of the Shepherds and Kings on the left and the Last Supper on the right .

Most of the furnishings in the chancel, such as the baptismal font , popular altar , ambo , sedilia and credenza , were renewed in the course of the renovation in 1986.

Wooden figures of the authors of the New Testament letters , the apostles John , James , Paul , Peter and Judas Thaddäus , are attached to Walter Kuen's pulpit .

painting

The wall fresco by the Viennese artist Sepp Maierhuber in the choir apse shows the motif of the mercy seat - Jesus on the crucifix , floating above the dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit , and above all God the Father . The two angels next to the cross stand for the Old (on the right with the tablets of the Law of Moses ) and the New Testament (on the left with the cup of the blood of Christ ). The four evangelist symbols complete the fresco below.

The Stations of the Cross come from the South Tyrolean artist Leo Sebastian Humer .

window

The windows were designed by the glass painter Carl Rieder from Schwaz based on the ideas of the pastor Gebhard Baldauf and manufactured in the Tyrolean glass painting establishment.

In the apse there are eight arched windows with abstract color patterns that develop from warm yellow and red tones below to cold blue tones above.

On each of the two long sides there are 12 high arched windows, which are arranged in pairs between the columns. Each of these 12 pairs of windows shows a picture that creates a connection between the work of Jesus Christ - in the upper part - and the actions of saints or other ecclesiastical or secular persons - in the lower part:

On the south side under the gallery are three smaller rectangular windows. While the two outer ones are designed with abstract color patterns, the middle one depicts the motif of St. Christopher carrying the baby Jesus on his shoulders through the water. It was donated by the architect Willibald Braun.

Opposite on the north side above the gallery is a round window with the title Maria as Queen of Angels . It shows Our Lady with the Infant Jesus on her lap, flanked on the right and left by two angels making music. This window was donated by the Lustenau pastor Gebhard Baldauf when the church was built.

Christ the Redeemer as King of all classes

The large, circular window on the west side above the entrance portal of the church bears the name Christ the Redeemer as King of all Estates . The motif, influenced by the corporate state at that time, shows Jesus in front of the cross with outstretched arms, the right hand forms the gesture of blessing . People from all walks of life gather around him: a young couple, an old woman, a farmer with a scythe, a mother with two children, an elegantly dressed businessman and a blacksmith with a hammer and anvil representing the trade.

Other facility

The Volksgestuhl consists of 18 rows of benches, eight in front of and ten behind the cloister, which are designed for 12 people each on the left and right, so there is space for 432 people in the benches. Until the renovation in 1986 there were 10 rows of benches in front of and behind the cloister, the nave thus originally offered 480 seats.

Under the gallery on the north wall there is a wooden crucifix from the mid-18th century. In front of it are a stand for sacrificial candles and a knee bench.

organ

The existing organ was set up in 1995 and consecrated by Bishop Klaus Küng at Pentecost .

Pastoral care

The Erlöserkirche was initially a branch church of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul . On October 1, 1940, a parish vicariate was set up and Josef Welte was assigned his own pastor, who was assigned the chaplain Hugo Kleinbrod as a parish assistant. The identification of the population with the new parish was not very strong at the beginning: the first Christmas mass at Christmas 1940 was attended by only about 50 believers, the others went to the mother church to visit the graves of their relatives in the cemetery after the mass, according to tradition can.

From 1941 to 1945 Hugo Kleinbrod was first in Gestapo detention because of his influence on the youth , then in the navy and finally in captivity, so that during this time only one priest was available for the newly established pastoral care area.

The Rhine village was raised to an independent parish on July 1, 1951.

On September 6, 1970, Josef Marte replaced the seventy-year-old Josef Welte as pastor of the Church of the Redeemer. The first election of a parish council on May 16, 1971 also fell during his term of office.

Thomas Sauter is currently pastor in Lustenau-Rheindorf.
