Ernst Johann Otto Hartert (born October 29, 1859 in Hamburg , † November 11, 1933 in Berlin ) was a German ornithologist .

Life

From 1889 to 1891, Hartert was responsible for reorganizing the more than 10,000 bird hides in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. From 1892 to 1929 he was employed as a bird curator at the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum in Tring . A decade-long friendship linked him - despite the two different species concepts - with the animal systematist Otto Kleinschmidt . It only ended with Hartert's death. 1889 to 1891 reorganization of the more than 10,000 mounted birds in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt.

Hartert published the museum magazine Novitates Zoologicae with Lionel Walter Rothschild , which appeared between 1894 and 1939. He was the author of The Birds of the Palearctic Fauna (1903-1922). He also wrote with Francis Charles Robert Jourdain , Norman Frederic Ticehurst (1873-1960) and Henry Witherby (1873-1943) the work List of British Birds (1912).

Hartert described numerous bird species scientifically for the first time, including the bristle raven ( Corvus rhipidurus ), the Amami woodcock ( Scolopax mira ), the mountain buzzard ( Buteo oreophilus ) and the giant salangan ( Hydrochous gigas ).

On behalf of Lord Rothschild, he traveled to India, Africa and South America. In 1930 Hartert returned to Berlin, where he died in 1933. Shortly before his death he became honorary chairman of the German Ornithological Society . He was the last ornithologist with a universal knowledge of the avifauna of all continents.

In 1891 married Hartert in on June 21, 1863 Coesfeld born Claudine Bernardine Elisabeth born End crack. With her he had a son Joachim Karl (1893-1916), who died as an English soldier on the Somme . Together with her he published some new species and subspecies in 1894. The widow died on August 24, 1958 in Hilversum .

Dedication names

Erwin Stresemann named the genus Hartertula after him in 1925 . The Hartertelfe ( Acestrura harterti ( Simon , 1901) syn .: Chaetocercus harterti , possibly hybrid origin), the Hartertfrogmouth ( Batrachostomus harterti Sharpe , 1892), the Hartert's bow wing ( Camaroptera harterti von Zedlitz , 1911), the pale-bellied earth chopper ( Tarphonomus hartonomus ( from Berlepsch , 1892)), the Hartertkolibri ( Phlogophilus harterti of Berlepsch & Stolzmann , 1901), Whip thistle tail ( Asthenes harterti of Berlepsch , 1901), the Banggaibülbül ( Thapsinillas harterti ( Stresemannplatz , 1912)), the Hartertbreitrachen ( Eurylaimus harterti van Oort , 1909) and the Hartertgrund snapper ( Ficedula harterti ( Siebers , 1928)) are named after him.
