Ernst Albrecht Friedrich Lewinger (born March 12, 1931 in Dresden ; † December 11, 2015 there ) was a German graphic artist , painter and illustrator .

Life

Ernst Lewinger was born in Dresden in 1931 into an upper-class family that lost its prosperity during the global economic crisis . The grandfather Ernst Lewinger was the chief director at the Royal Saxon Court Theater until 1918 . Lewinger took private lessons from Edmund Kesting in 1947/1948 and from 1948 to 1951 he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts with Josef Hegenbarth and Hans Theo Richter .

In the years 1951 to 1953 he switched to the Berlin-Charlottenburg University of the Arts on a currency scholarship , where he had important representatives of non-figurative post-war art as teachers with Alexander Camaro and Hans Uhlmann . After that he was a freelancer from 1953 to 1957 as a commercial artist working in Dresden. From 1957 to 1959 he worked as a drawing teacher and from 1960 to 1965 he was a research assistant at the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden . From 1965 he was again working as a freelancer. From 1972 to 1986 fourteen fiction books with his series of illustrations were published. Lewinger was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR .

Ernst Lewinger died on December 11, 2015 at the age of 84 in Dresden.
