Ernst Leuninger (theologian)

Ernst Weinand Leuninger (born November 5, 1933 in Cologne - Ossendorf ; † June 9, 2018 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was a German Catholic theologian , university professor and honorary canon .

Life

Ernst Leuninger was the youngest of three children from Alois and Elisabeth Leuninger from Mengerskirchen in the Westerwald , his brother Herbert was also a Catholic priest. His uncle Franz Leuninger was a Christian trade unionist and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime, who was hanged on March 1, 1945 in Berlin-Plötzensee prison .

After graduating from high school in Weilburg, Leuninger studied philosophy and theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich . On December 8, 1959, he received the Limburg Cathedral the priesthood by Bishop William Kempf .

In 1960 he went to the cathedral parish of Wetzlar as a pastoral care trainee and was then chaplain in Lorch (May to July 1960), in Wetzlar-Niedergirmes (July 1960 to January 1962) and in the Frankfurt parish of St. Bernhard (January 1962 to April 1966). As a youth pastor he was involved in the district youth pastoral care in Winkel from 1966 to 1970 . There he was also clergyman assistant for Caritas work in the Rheingau district from 1968 to 1970 .

From 1970 Leuninger worked in the Episcopal Ordinariate in Limburg an der Lahn , where he was a member of the Spiritual Council and the Pastoral Office and headed the Pastoral Care Department (which later became the basic pastoral care department). He was also director of the Bonifatiuswerk until 1977 . From 1975 to 1979 he was a member of the staff chamber in the Episcopal Ordinariate Limburg, before he was in charge of adult work in the diocese from 1979 to 1998, where, among other things, he set up the "Theology in correspondence course" program. Since 1977 Leuninger was also active as a synod examiner. From 1982 to 2004 he worked as diocesan president in library work in the diocese.

Leuninger received his doctorate in theology in 1980 ; In 1985 he completed his habilitation and received the venia legendi for the subject of Christian social studies . From 1987 to 1997 he taught as an honorary professor for Christian social studies and adult education at the Philosophical-Theological College in Vallendar . In 1999 he was appointed professor of pastoral theology and Christian social studies at the Philosophical-Theological College in Vallendar, which he held until he was 68 in 2001. Leuninger has published numerous scientific publications, especially pastoral work aids.

From 1998 to 2004 he was diocesan president in the Limburg diocesan association of the Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB). Leuninger's full-time councilor was retired in July 1998, but continued to work in the Limburg diocese as Rector ecclesiae of the pilgrimage church of Nothgottes (1984 to 1999). As the bishop's representative in the diocese's aid to Bosnia (1997 to 2007) he was committed to the reconstruction of houses and churches and was the organizer of the donation projects “Sheep for Bosnia” and “Cows for Kosovo”.
