Ernst Zdrahal
Ernst Zdrahal (* 1944 in Vienna ) is an Austrian visual artist who lives and works in Vienna.
biography
- 1958–1961 studies at the higher federal graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna
- 1961–1973 worked as a lithographer and commercial artist
- Since 1973 freelance artist in Vienna
- Since 1997 member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus
Work creation
The painter, graphic artist and illustrator Ernst Zdrahal has developed a unique language of colors and shapes over the years. With groups of works such as the “Architectural and Egyptian Landscapes” or the “Mummies of Palermo” through to the partly figurative works under the title “Homage to Giorgio de Chirico ”, to name just a few, the artist shows new relationships between color , Form, gestures and vitality.
“Print and collage are important aspects of his compositional principle. Zdrahal's individually developed printing processes are not only interesting because of their technique, but also as a concept: he repeatedly picks up on finished motifs, in the Alpine cycle also icons of art history, such as Albin Egger-Lienz or Alfons Walde , and puts them in a new context . The artist has always dealt with the work of other artists. As early as the 1970s, stays in Madrid and Barcelona lead to an intense confrontation with Goya , Velázquez and Dali . Like working with personalities like Picasso , De Chirico, Fellini or Mozart , working together with artists is always a reflection of other perspectives for him and the opportunity to open up new creative spaces.
Everyday, socially critical and political topics, which he incorporates into his artistic work, always bring new and surprising results. Book illustrations for Chobot and Unterrader prove his drawing qualities - which he shows masterfully in many of his works.
Exhibition activity
Since his first exhibition in 1968, Ernst Zdrahal has created a remarkable oeuvre . He shows his work not only in Austria, but also abroad again and again. His exhibition activities extend from Italy to Portugal to America, South Africa and Bangkok.
