Ernst Karl August Freiherr von Rentz (born July 8, 1812 in Großburg , † June 4, 1884 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

Ernst was a son of the gentleman at Großburg Karl Heinrich Freiherr von Rentz († 1859) and his wife Charlotte, born Freiin von Canitz and Dallwitz . She was a sister of the Prussian Lieutenant General and Foreign Minister Karl von Canitz and Dallwitz (1787–1850).

Military career

Rentz attended boarding school in Gnadenfrei and the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Breslau . After graduating, he joined the 10th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a musketeer on February 12, 1830 and advanced to secondary lieutenant until mid-June 1832 . For further training he completed the General War School for three years from October 1835 . In 1842/47 Rentz was in command as adjutant of the 2nd Battalion in the 10th Landwehr Regiment in Oels . Promoted to Prime Lieutenant on June 10, 1848 , he was a company commander in the 1st Battalion of the 10th Landwehr Regiment in Breslau from 1849 to 1852. After his return he was promoted to captain on June 22, 1852 . As major and commander of the 1st Battalion, he returned to the 10th Landwehr Regiment on May 19, 1859. On May 8, 1860, he was commanded as a battalion leader to the 10th Combined Infantry Regiment, from which the 3rd Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 50 emerged on July 1, 1860 . Rentz was given command of the 1st Battalion and took part in the battles in Jutland in 1864 during the war against Denmark . At the end of June 1864 he rose to lieutenant colonel . During the mobilization on the occasion of the German War , he became commander of the 15th Landwehr Regiment on May 20, 1866 and, after the occupation of Saxony, was city ​​commander of Dresden for four weeks .

After the peace treaty and the dissolution of the Landwehr Regiment Rentz was aggregated to the 3rd Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment on September 17, 1866 . After his promotion to colonel , he was appointed commander of the 1st Posen Infantry Regiment in Schweidnitz on October 30, 1866 . Due to health reasons, after 41 years of service, he took his leave on June 8, 1869, with a pension and the right to wear his regimental uniform.

For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Rentz was reactivated as commander of the Deputy 23rd Infantry Brigade and at the same time was for two months in command of the Neisse fortress . In this capacity he was responsible for guarding around 17,000 French prisoners of war. Rentz received the character of Major General on February 24, 1871 and returned to the inactive relationship on July 11, 1871. In 1872 Rentz was accepted as a knight of honor in the Order of St. John . He died on June 4, 1884 in Berlin.

Rentz married on November 2, 1840 in Glatz Elisabeth von Delius (1818-1880). The marriage resulted in the son Gustav in 1841. After his wife's death, Rentz married Marie Luise Henriette Schroepffer (1831–1883) in 1881.
