The Eschelbach is a 4 km long brook in the Murrhardt Forest in the Rems-Murr district in northern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the upper Murr in the Schleißweiler district of Sulzbach an der Murr from the left and from the southwest .

The Eschelbach arises on the tendon of the river arch of the upper and middle Murr , the north-western summit point of which is located in Sulzbach an der Murr . Its source is on the wooded northeast slope of the Zollstock ( 543.7  m above sea level ) at about 530  m above sea level. NHN , about 600 meters away from the Eschelhof hiking home in the southern parish of Sulzbach. Where it reaches this, it bends at a right angle to the southeast and runs through its two pre-ponds and the half-hectare-sized Eschel pond for the next half kilometer at the edge of the forest . Here it detaches itself from the edge of the clearing and then gradually turns back on the now permanent northeast course, which it has reached at the inlet of the half-kilometer-long right Reutebach . This arises in the Reutewald on the northwest slope of the second highest mountain Springstein ( 532.5  m above sea level ) in the catchment area at about 495  m above sea level. NHN . At this inlet, the Eschelbach already runs in a total of almost a kilometer long, steep blade crack in a more and more deepening forest valley between the Buchenrain on the left and the hillside forest below the clearing island around the Murrhardt hamlet Siebenknie on the right. For about 600 meters of this section, the creek is also followed by the district boundary between Sulzbach an der Murr on the left and Murrhardt on the right , which has descended along the Reutebach . From a valley floor height of about 350  m above sea level. NHN develops a sole and the valley now falls flatter, here the municipal border leaves the valley again along another right tributary from the direction of Siebenknie.

About three hundred meters down, the bottom of the valley begins to open and it becomes wider and more trough-like, after another 400 meters it flows under free lower slopes on both sides at almost 210  m above sea level. NHN the Ittenberger Bach , last coming from the west, into the Eschelbach. With a length of 1.9 km and a catchment area of ​​around 1.7 km², it is his most important tributary. Taking up some tributaries from the right slope, the accompanying galleries of which extend as forest tongues partly down to its bank, the stream continues to flow northeast and emerges behind the last gallery, at the first house in the Sulzbach district of Schleißweiler, at around 185  m above sea level. For the last few hundred meters, the Eschelbach runs in the soft area of ​​the hamlet, crosses under the Waiblingen – Schwäbisch Hall-Hessental railway line and finally flows below 275  m above sea level. Catchment area

The catchment area of ​​the Eschelbach covers 4.8 km², which are mainly in the natural area of Murrhardter Wald and with the significantly smaller portion, namely only the tip of the mouth wedge, in the natural area of Murrtal , which are both parts of the Swabian-Franconian Forest . In the longest stretch from its southwest corner on the summit of the Zollstock in the southwest a little above the Eschelbach spring to the mouth at its northeastern tip, it measures about 3.6 km, across it from the Springstein summit in the southeast to a flatter field crest in the highland island around Sulzbach- Ittenberg 2.5 km.

The highest watershed runs on the south side between Springstein ( 532.5  m above sea level ) in the south-east and Zollstock ( 543.7  m above sea level ) in the south-west, behind it the Brüdenbach collects the precipitation and leads it over the Weißach of the middle Murr to. Beyond the western watershed, which extends from the folding rule to an only 478  m above sea level. The agricultural areas on the plateau and in the Murrtal are predominantly fields, while there are more meadows and trees in the open Untertal. The only settlement areas in the catchment area are the hamlet of Ittenberg (whole), the individual property - today Wanderheim - Eschelhof (whole) and the hamlet of Siebenknie (only a few houses) on the plateau and the hamlet of Schleißweiler (about half) in the Murrtal. The small town of Murrhardt has an area share of almost one sixth on the eastern edge, around 1 hectare of forest in the very south belongs to the municipality of Auenwald , the large remainder of around 4.0 km² belongs to the municipality of Sulzbach an der Murr. The catchment area of ​​the Eschelbach lies in the Mittelkeuper . The erosion-resistant sandstone layers of the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein Formation ), on which the sources of the two main streams lie, are the cause of the pronounced high-surface areas. Below, on the slopes of the valley, follow one another in rapid succession: Obere Bunte Mergel ( Mainhardt Formation ), Kieselsandstein ( Hassberge Formation ), Lower Colorful Mergel ( Steigerwald Formation ) and a very narrow band of reed sandstone ( Stuttgart Formation ). The layers of marl allow the steep valley slopes to slide easily. The lowest layer that emerges is the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ), which is already reached in the two upper valleys before the confluence of the Ittenberger Bach and Eschelbach and where the Eschelbach also flows into the Murr. At its entry into the Murraue, the brook has deposited a confluence fan which has displaced the receiving water Murr, which runs in a wide strip of flood sediment, a little to the opposite slope.

Protected areas

The catchment area of ​​the Eschelbach lies in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park . An area of about 15 hectares around the Eschelhof than conservation area Eschelhof expelled ha 33 in the open Untertal as conservation area Eschelbachtal .
