The Esporte Clube Bahia , in German-speaking commonly known as EC Bahia , is a football club from Salvador , capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia . The club, founded in 1931, is not only the most successful in its home country, but is also the first winner of an official national soccer competition, the Taça Brasil from 1959, which was officially assimilated to a national championship in 2010. In 1988 he won the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol , making Bahia two-time Brazilian champions.

Club history

The club emerged in 1930 from a founding of former members of Associação Atlética da Bahia and Clube Bahiano de Tênis , as these clubs ceased football. In February 1931, the EC Bahia joined the Liga Bahiana de Desportos Terrestres , the predecessor organization of today's national football association Federação Bahiana de Futebol . In October of the same year, the club won its first state championship.

In October 1939, the Tricolor achieved their highest victory to date in the local derby when they defeated EC Vitória 10-1. In 1948 the EC Bahia celebrated its 10th national championship.

In 1959, the first national competition, a cup tournament called Taça do Brasil , is held in Brazil to determine the participants in the first play of the Copa Libertadores . The EC Bahia created a sensation when it defeated the dominant club of that era, the FC Santos around the legendary Pelé after results of 3: 2 and 0: 2 in the playoff with 3: 1. In the following years from 1961 Santos should win the cup five times in a row, while Bahia was the opponent two more times in the final. But both in 1961, with results of 1: 1 and 1: 5, and in 1963, after 0: 2 and 0: 6, the team from Salvador had no chance against the team from the port city in southeastern Brazil.

The EC Bahia was able to hold itself relatively harmless in the state championships. 1962 achieved the 20th success and 1974 followed the 25th triumph for the trophy of the Bahian Football Association. Between 1973 and 1979 there were even seven victories in a row. In the 1970s, Bahia was only denied the 1972 title when the finals were lost to local rivals EC Vitória 1: 2 and 1: 3.

Bahia also dominated the state championship in the 1980s and won 7 titles. The big triumph, however, was the championship of Brazil in 1988. At home, Bahia won the final first leg in front of 90,000 spectators 2-1 against SC Internacional from Porto Alegre at the southern end of Brazil. In the second leg, the Tricolor were able to hold a 1: 1 and thus secured the title.

In 2014 the club was relegated to Série B. In 2016 Bahia managed as third in the table of Série B again the promotion to the top division and has been able to hold it since then. In 2018 and 2019, the club again won titles in the state championship.

For more than half a century, EC Bahia played its home games in the Fonte Nova stadium, officially known as Estádio Octávio Mangabeira, built in 1951 and with a capacity of up to 110,000 spectators. It was one of those classic, wide, almost round stadiums in Brazil. Recently it attracted even the end of 2007 often up to 60,000 people to the rise of games to Série B at. On November 25, 2007, in the decisive game against Vila Nova , however, the stadium collapsed in part, killing seven people. The Fonte Nova Arena, which can hold 52,048 spectators, was rebuilt at the site of the old Estádio Octávio Mangabeira for the 2014 World Cup . After the arena opened for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup , it will also host the home games of EC Bahia.
