The Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores is a soccer stadium with an athletics facility in the Guatemalan capital Guatemala City . It has space for 26,000 spectators and is the home ground of the CSD Municipal .

history

The Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores was built between 1948 and 1950 and opened on August 18, 1950 during the 6th Central American and Caribbean Games , in which Doroteo "Mateo" Guamuch Flores , a long-distance runner from Guatemala , won the half marathon . At first the stadium was called Estadio Olímpico . But when Flores also won the Boston Marathon in 1952 , the Estadio Olimpico was renamed Estadio Mateo Flores by order of the Guatemalan government . In 1965 the CONCACAF Nations Cup , the predecessor of the Gold Cup , was held in the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores . All the games in the competition took place in this stadium. In 1973, Guatemala hosted the first Central American Youth Games, with all games also taking place in the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores. Three other editions of this competition (1986 and 2001) were also held in this stadium. The Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores is also the finish line of the Guatemala cycling tour, the largest cycling competition in Central America.

On October 16, 1996, shortly before the qualifying game for the 1998 World Cup against Costa Rica, at least 83 people died in a mass panic. Previously, the sale of fake tickets had caused the stadium to be overcrowded. In addition, there were hardly any possibilities in the stadium to prevent this catastrophe. The President of Guatemala, Álvaro Arzú Irigoyen , immediately decided that Guatemala would withdraw from qualifying for the World Cup. As a result of this event, FIFA banned the further use of the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores for international matches until the security problems were resolved. In the meantime, international matches can be held here again, although the stadium is still not one hundred percent safe. It is still considered to be prone to the emergence of emergency situations during high-attendance games.

The CSD Municipal association has played its home games at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores since 1950 . Municipal has been the champion of Guatemala 25 times and has won the national cup eight times. The club celebrated its greatest success in 1974 when it won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup in the final against SV Transvaal from Suriname . 1995 succeeded again in the final, but this time Deportivo Saprissa from Costa Rica got the upper hand.

Numerous concerts have also taken place in the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores. As played here, among other things already Metallica , The Black Eyed Peas , Carlos Santana , Ricky Martin , Guns N 'Roses , The Rasmus , Daddy Yankee and Bon Jovi .
