The deciduous grape heather ( Eubotrys racemosa ) is a species of the genus Eubotrys within the heather family (Ericaceae). It comes in the eastern United States along the coastal plains of Massachusetts through Florida as far as Texas before and is there english fat bush, swamp doghobble swamp, sweet bells is called.

Vegetative characteristics

The summer green grape heather is a deciduous shrub and reaches heights of growth of up to 4 meters. The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The simple, thin, smooth leaf blades are oval to broadly lanceolate with a length of 3 to 8 centimeters, with smaller and larger leaves on the same branch. The leaf margin is sawn.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in a row on one side of the inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . The bell-shaped corolla is white and less than 1 centimeter long.

A capsule fruit is formed.

Habitat and classification

Eubotrys racemosa grows in habitats on the coastal plains together with pine species such as Pinus taeda , Pinus elliottii and Pinus echinata as well as oak species. It lives in different biotope types such as savannas , forests, moors and pocosins . The climate in their range is mild in winter and hot and humid in summer. It does not tolerate shading and usually grows in fully sunlit areas. Eubotrys racemosa can be associated with species such as Nyssa sylvatica , Gordonia lasianthus , Persea borbonia , Acer rubrum , Cyrilla racemiflora , Chamaecyparis thyoides , Lyonia lucida , Clethra alnifolia , Myrica cerifera and Smilax laurifolia .

The TNC classifies Eubotrys racemosa as “harmless” (“G5”).

Taxonomy

The first publication took place in 1753 under the name ( Basionym ) Andromeda racemosa by Carl von Linné . The new combination to Eubotrys racemosa (L.) Nutt. Thomas Nuttall was published by Thomas Nuttall in Transactions of the American Philosophical Society , new series 8, p. 269 in 1843 .
