Eugène Samuel Grasset (born May 25, 1845 in Lausanne , † October 23, 1917 in Sceaux near Paris ) was a Swiss - French sculptor , painter and illustrator of the Belle Époque and pioneer of Art Nouveau .

Life

Eugène was the son of the master carpenter Samuel Joseph Grasset and his wife Jeanne Louise Marguerite Burnens. Between 1861 and 1863, Grasset studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich , under Professor Gottfried Semper . After studying architecture at the Polytechnic in Zurich, he joined an architectural office in Lausanne. An extensive study trip to Egypt also took place at this time . From 1871 Grasset moved to Paris. In addition, he was active in almost all areas of the applied arts in the following years. Grasset not only draws illustrations, but also furniture and posters and designs the facade of the Hôtel de Dumas in Paris as well as mosaics , leaded glass windows , wallpaper patterns , jewelry , calendars , stamps and much more. His illustrations are particularly influenced by the style of Gustave Doré , whereas he took an example from Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in relation to his arts and crafts .

Eugène Grasset took French citizenship in 1891. Between 1890 and 1903 he taught as a professor at the École Guérin and from 1905 until his death at the École Estienne and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Among his students were Augusto Giacometti , Paul Follot , Maurice Pillard Verneuil , Paul Berthon and Eliseu Visconti . He created the Grasset font named after him , which was presented at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris .
