history
The original Roman name was Brivodurum . Little by little, a small town developed that lived mainly from trade on the Loire and viticulture . Under Henry IV the idea arose to connect the Loire and Seine rivers by a ship canal . But only in 1642 was under Louis XIII. the Canal de Briare completed, which flows into the Loire at Briare. Since the Loire river was not navigable with larger merchant ships because of its many shallows , the Loire Lateral Canal ( Canal latéral à la Loire ) was built and completed in 1838. That is why an earthenware factory was founded there in 1837, which later produced porcelain buttons and then mosaics . But the river crossing of the Loire at Briare was always dangerous and dependent on the water flow. Finally, the famous canal bridge over the Loire (Pont-Canal) was designed by the engineer Léonce-Abel Mazoyer and built by Gustave Eiffel with the help of the company and opened in 1896. This means that there are no longer any obstacles to a positive development in canal shipping and the trading city of Briare.
