Saint-Pierre church

Poilly-lez-Gien is a French commune with 2,406 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loiret in the region Center-Val de Loire ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Montargis and the canton of Sully-sur-Loire (until 2015: canton of Gien ).

The community is located in the Unité urbaine of Gien . Part of the area is under Natura 2000 protection.

The origin of the name from Latin suggests the court of a man named Paullius . An ax and other objects from the Gallo-Roman culture were found in the municipality. The place remained settled in the Merovingian times and in the Middle Ages.

In 1567 the local church was partially destroyed by Protestants. In 1836 expansion and restoration work was carried out on the church. The town hall was built in 1858.

The population, which was 1366 in 1962, had risen to 2301 in 1990.

There is a primary school and a college in the village .
