Yevgeny Kaspersky (2014)

Yevgeny Walentinowitsch Kasperski ( Russian Евгений Валентинович Касперский , internationally also known under the English form Eugene Kaspersky ; born October 4, 1965 in Novorossiysk ) is a Russian computer virus expert. He heads the international IT security company Kaspersky Lab , which he founded together with several employees in 1997. Before that, he had been developing antivirus technologies since the late 1980s.

education

Kaspersky developed a keen interest in mathematics in his youth . While attending school, he was already participating in extra-curricular courses in higher mathematics and physics organized by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology . After winning a mathematics competition, he was invited to enroll in a school specializing in science, the Kolmogorov Special Educational-Scientific Center of Lomonosov University . Here he studied physics and mathematics.

In 1987 he graduated from the KGB University in Moscow (renamed the Institute for Cryptography, Telecommunications and Computer Science in 1992 to become the FSB Academy), where he studied mathematics, cryptography and computer technology. His major was technical mathematics .

Professional background

After graduating, Kaspersky worked in a military research institute in the Soviet Union in the field of strategic operations and espionage . It was there in October 1989 that he discovered the “Cascade” computer virus (also known as the fall foliage virus in Germany ) on his computer. After analyzing the virus, Kaspersky developed a disinfection tool for it. Cascade was the first malware to be included in Kaspersky Lab's antivirus database, which today contains well over 100 million malware samples.

From 1991 to 1997 he worked at the scientific and technical center KAMI. There, together with a group of like-minded people, he developed the AVP antivirus project, the forerunner of the Kaspersky Anti-Virus program. Eugene Kaspersky founded in 1997 together with his then-wife Natalya Ivanovna Kasperskaja the company Kaspersky Lab , the antivirus software and other security software offering. Kaspersky Lab is now active with over 30 regional and national offices in almost 200 countries.

Yevgeny Kaspersky is one of the world's leading specialists in virus protection. He has published a large number of articles and reviews on problems in computational virology and regularly appears in seminars and conferences in Russia and abroad. Kasperski is a member of the CARO computer virus research organization .

Yevgeny Kaspersky was head of the company until 2007, after which he became CEO of Kaspersky Lab. Today Kaspersky focuses on the management of the company and in the future he will run Kaspersky Lab's business to later take over the management. That is why he travels around the world, speaks at conferences and trade fairs, takes part in high-level meetings and partner conferences and gives interviews to the international press. Because of his technical knowledge, and because he is the co-founder and CEO of the largest private IT security company, Kasperski is a sought-after and influential speaker at relevant events.

He is also the co-owner of several patents , including one for a restriction and attribute-based security system that controls the interaction of software components. This patent describes the technological heart of a secure operating system that the company is currently developing.

Political positions

In October 2009, Kaspersky called for greater control of the Internet, which he believes should be achieved through the introduction of Internet passports and Internet security authorities, among other things. He supports plans for Internet IDs for critical transactions such as voting, online banking, communications with authorities, etc. He says, “I believe the World Wide Web should be divided into three areas. A red zone for critical processes - an Internet ID should be mandatory here. This is followed by the yellow zone, in which only minimal authorization is required - such as proof of age for online shops that sell alcohol or should only be accessible to adults. And finally there is the green zone: blogs, social networks, news sites, chats ... - everything that enables our freedom of speech. No authorization is required here. "

Yevgeny Kaspersky is a member of the International Advisory Board of the International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats ( IMPACT ).

He has spoken for years about his concerns about possible "catastrophic" cyberattacks on critical infrastructure . He supports the concept of a non-proliferation treaty for cyber weapons, and sees the escalation of cyber war as a "call to action" for the international community.

He regularly speaks at events about the dangers of cyber war and the need to combat the growing security threats in international cooperation. He also sees cyber security training as the key to dealing with security challenges - training both for users in general and for IT security employees who often have no special training. In addition, he advocates universal cybersecurity standardization and corresponding policies as well as cooperation between governments and the security industry: “The private sector - above all IT and security industries, but also certain critical industries, have long been at the top for IT security on the agenda - has a lot of direct experience with cyber disputes, from which government organizations can benefit if they have access to it. "

After a meeting in March 2013 between Yevgeny Kaspersky, Ronald Noble ( INTERPOL Secretary General) and Noboru Nakatani (INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) Executive Director), Kaspersky Lab formally agreed to work with the IGCI to improve the security of the Internet should be better protected.

In an interview with the Russian media magazine Lenta.ru in autumn 2013, the entrepreneur Kaspersky commented on his company's relationship with the surveillance of the Internet by secret services: “We not only cooperate with the FSB (the Russian domestic intelligence service), but also with the Americans and the Brazilians and with a number of European agencies on security and cybercrime. We have a group of experts who can crack codes better than anyone else in the world, maybe after the FBI. … We don't have the ability to do all kinds of detective work, it's not our job. But we give them the information with which they can continue to catch criminals. ” In the interview, Kaspersky also counts Russian oppositionists as such criminals insofar as they violate Russian laws and mentions the Russian opposition activist and internet blogger Alexei Navalny by name . Kasperski also expresses his admiration for the political systems in Singapore and China , which are particularly effective, and says that he cannot distinguish between the one-party system of the Soviet Union , which he considered a happy and just country as a child, and the Recognize the UStwo-party” system .

Private life

Yevgeny Kaspersky lives relatively secluded with his third wife in Moscow and has three children. He himself does not use a smartphone and is not a fan of smart technologies.

In April 2011, Kasperski's 20-year-old son Ivan was kidnapped. The kidnappers wanted to extort three million euros. When the ransom was handed over a few days later near Moscow, five suspects were arrested. The domestic secret service FSB , special police units and Kasperski's own security personnel were involved in the liberation . The son was released safely. No ransom was paid. The son had given his home address via a social network on the Internet.

Kasperski's personal fortune was estimated by Forbes Russia magazine in 2010 at $ 800 million (about EUR 549 million). This ranks him 125th among the richest people in Russia.

In public he is not known as a braggart ("I own a company, an apartment in Moscow and a BMW. I don't need more."). But he has a penchant for Formula 1 , whose races he regularly attends. In 2010, Kaspersky Lab became a sponsor of the Italian AF Corse Ferrari racing team, and a year later also started sponsoring the Formula 1 racing team Scuderia Ferrari, which still exists today. In April 2013, Kaspersky Lab signed a five-year contract with Ferrari to supply security products for all of the team's computers.

Yevgeny Kaspersky is described by the press as a charismatic, happy character.

Kasperski blogs not only about security issues, but also regularly about the countries and places he visits. He likes to visit exotic areas; the volcanic Kamchatka peninsula in eastern Russia, which he has already toured several times, is one of his favorites.

Trivia

Kasperski's office is right next to that of the company's top experts - members of the Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT), and just a few meters from the control center, the “Virus Lab”. The offices of the most important developers and virus analysts are also located on the same floor. Kasperski still sees himself as a technical specialist who feels comfortable with technicians and understands their work.

Journalist Noah Shachtman claimed in an article published on Wired in 2012 that Yevgeny Kaspersky had connections with the Kremlin . Kaspersky denies such claims.

In 2012 Kasperski was from Plymouth University , the honorary doctorate awarded in science. In the same year, CRN magazine named him among the "Top 25 Innovators of the Year".
