The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (short ENTSO-G , of English European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas ) is an association in which the operators of transmission networks for natural gas have joined forces in Europe. ENTSO-G is based in Brussels .

History and tasks

ENTSO-G was created in 2009 as part of the third EU energy package adopted in 2007 for the liberalization and opening of the electricity and gas markets in Europe. The corresponding sister association for transmission system operators (electricity) is ENTSO-E .

The tasks are partly defined in the EC Regulation No. 715/2009 on the conditions for access to the natural gas pipeline networks. In this EU regulation it is referred to by name as "ENTSO (Gas)". Derived from this, ENTSO-G is responsible for:

  • Standardization, allocation and administration of network codes
  • Elaboration of an EU-wide ten-year plan for the development of the gas network
  • Improving the flow of information from the TSOs to the market participants
  • Creation of common work tools to coordinate the operation of the network

In addition, ENTSO-G works with the EU Commission and the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulatory Authorities (ACER).

Members

ENTSO-G has 44 transmission system operators (TSOs) as full members and two associated partners from 26 EU countries. There are also five observers from non-EU countries (as of 2020).
