The Evangelical Church Johannisthal is on Sterndamm 92-96 in the Johannisthal district of the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick .

history

The residents of Johannisthal were parished to Rudow from 1802 until they formed their own Protestant parish in 1892. In 1921, the parish acquired the former Kaiser Wilhelm Garden restaurant. Its ballroom was in the First World War, the Navy aviators as officers' mess served then as a cinema . It was converted into a church, which was consecrated on July 3, 1921.

In 1960 the church was renovated and a winter church was set up in it. In 1976 it was rebuilt to create a community room.

Building description

The hall church , a plastered masonry building on a rectangular floor plan , flanked by wooden verandas , follows the simple classicist churches of Schinkel's time . It has a gable roof . The facade is divided into five axes by pilaster strips , between which there are four arched windows , one of which is blind, and the portal . There is a round arched panel above the cornice of the portal . A cast-iron trefoil cross is emblazoned on the gable . The walls of the interior are structured with pilasters , the flat ceiling is plastered. The room acoustics of the hall, which was built as a music hall and not as a church hall, could be improved by the subsequent installation of an acoustic ceiling for speech intelligibility without significantly impairing the musical experience.

The altar and the pulpit are arranged concentrically. The copper baptismal font on one narrow side was designed by Fritz Kühn using a bowl that was built before 1897. The lock seats were initially retained from the old inventory of the cinema .

Organs

The organ of the Johannisthaler church came into the church in 1921. The instrument built by Heinze was restored in 2003 by the Potsdam company Alexander Schuke Orgelbau . The disposition is as follows:

A second smaller organ, also built by Schuke in 1990 as Opus 569 with five stops on a manual and pedal , was given away in 2010 by the Protestant parish Berlin-Johannisthal to the Salzburg church in the Russian city ​​of Gussew .

Bells

In front of the church is a free-standing bell chair with three cast steel bells from the Bochumer Verein bell foundry ; the largest bell is dated from 1873.
