The Evangelical Laurentius Church in Usingen , a town in the Hochtaunus district in Hesse , was originally built at the end of the 15th to the beginning of the 16th century. The church on Kirchgasse is a protected architectural monument .

history

From 1475 to 1518, the church dedicated to St. Laurentius consecrated church built. It burned down in part in 1635 and was rebuilt from 1651 to 1658 by the Hanau master builder August Rumpf.

architecture

The three-aisled hall church , which is essentially late Gothic, has a two- bay choir that closes off on three sides. The plastered building is structured by visible corner blocks and cornices . The choir is supported by buttresses , the sacristy is added to the south of the choir.

The five-storey west tower was started by Hans Koltern in 1490. It ends with a slated eight-sided bell house with a tower house and a hood. There is a portal in the originally open tower hall . The first floor, formerly a chapel , has a flat roof and has a tracery window in the west and a pointed arch window in the east.

Organ prospectus

Inside the church has a flat roof, only the sacristy still has the original vault . The galleries date from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century, the west gallery is decorated with pictures of the apostles . In 1900/01 the southern windows were enlarged in a neo-Gothic style and provided with leaded glass windows from the workshop of Wilhelm Franke from Naumburg an der Saale .

In the church there are three epitaphs from the end of the 17th century. On the south side there are gravestones , of which especially those for Carl von Stockheim († 1551) and Reinhard von Schletten († 1609) are well preserved.

organ

The organ was built in 1971/72 by the organ builder Günter Hardt (Möttau) using pipe material from the previous instrument. The organ has 31 stops on two manuals and a pedal. The actions are mechanical.

Princely Crypt

From 1736 a princely crypt was built under the sacristy as a burial place for the princes of Nassau-Usingen . In 1775 a new crypt was added to the east of the sacristy, in which there are 14 coffins.

The reburial of Prince Ludwig (Nassau-Saarbrücken) on November 23, 1995 in the castle church in Saarbrücken caused a stir .

Pastor

  • Conrad Marsilius Wenck became rector of the Latin school in 1623, pastor in 1635 and inspector in Usingen in 1661
  • Carl Ludwig Schmidt was the first pastor and inspector in Usingen from 1753–1756 (Inspector Dioecesis Usingensis)
  • Jacob Ludwig Schellenberg was pastor in Usingen from 1765 to 1777, and from 1773 also head of the Latin school in Usingen
  • Karl Philipp Georg Daniel Wilhelm Spieß became pastor in Usingen in 1815 and dean in 1852
  • Heinrich Schellenberg was a pastor in Usingen from 1842–1854
