Eyholzer

Eyholzer is an autochthonous red wine variety from the Swiss canton of Valais . The grape variety is grown in the village of Eyholz near Visp (0.25 hectares, status 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG). The classic vine training method is the pergola . DNA analyzes by José Vouillamoz have confirmed that the Eyholzer is related to grape varieties from the Italian Aosta Valley . The red wine has a currant aroma and is very tannic .

The Eyholzer belongs to a group of grape varieties that have been able to maintain themselves in the geographical island location of the Alpine regions of Italy and the Valais in Switzerland. The following varieties belong to this group:

Synonyms

Hibou noir (Galet 1990) in Savoy , not to be confused with the Hibou Rouge (Galet 1990), Roter Eyholzer. The Avana described from the Susa Valley (Schneider & Mannini 2006) is identical to Hibou rouge (Galet 1990).
