List of grape varieties

Lafnetscha is an autochthonous (local) white wine variety from the canton of Valais in Switzerland . It is primarily grown in the German-speaking Upper Valais (1.35 hectares, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG). According to a DNA analysis by José Vouillamoz , it is a spontaneous cross between Humagne Blanc x Completer. The name is based on the dialect of Valais German . Since the late-ripening vine almost always too early and the berries are thus harvested in an immature state had who needed wine because of its acidity and astringency a long extension and could not (in dialect too young to drink so gelafft be). Laff-nit-scha therefore doesn't already mean drink . When fully ripe, the variety produces very aromatic (→ aromas in wine ), spicy white wines with hints of exotic fruits.

In his home in Valais, Lafnetscha was often confused with the Completer grape variety . In 2002, Dominique Maigre and Michel Pont from the Changins Vine Research Institute found Completer vines in a Lafnetscha plant in the vineyards near Visp . Because of the larger berries of the Completer, these sticks were called Grosser Lafnetscha .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is whitish and slightly woolly hairy. The yellow-green young leaves are only hairy cobwebs.
  • The thick and large leaves are usually three-lobed or, less often, five-lobed. The stem bay is closed. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical to conical grape is shouldered and large (up to 1 kg in weight). The elliptical berries are medium-sized and green-yellow in color. The skin of the berry is thin to medium thick.

Lafnetscha ripens almost 25 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late by international standards. The variety is vigorous and is considered high-yielding.
