Fabrizio Dionigi Ruffo (born September 16, 1744 in San Lucido near Naples, † December 13, 1827 in Naples ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Life

Ruffo was sent to Rome to study in 1748 by his great-uncle, Cardinal Dean Tommaso Ruffo . In September 1767 he became a doctor of both rights . Pope Clement XIII. awarded him the title of papal house prelate as early as 1764. In 1767 the lawyer became a consultant at the Roman Rota, and in 1775 the new Pope Pius VI appointed him . him as Commendatar Abbot of San Filippo d'Argiro. As one of the Pope's closest confidants, he also became papal treasurer a few years later.

Pope Pius VI appointed Ruffo cardinal in pectore in September 1791 . This was published in February 1794. At that time he was without ordination, only later was he ordained a deacon .

He followed King Ferdinand IV of Naples into exile in Palermo , Sicily, when the République Parthénopéenne was proclaimed, and was appointed Vicar General of the Kingdom in January 1799. He secretly returned to mainland Italy a month later to strengthen the opposition to the French regime and started the reactionary Sanfediste movement . Ruffo organized the uprisings in Apulia and Calabria . Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Capece Zurlo , ( OTheat ), who was Archbishop of Naples at the time, tried to prevent a general uprising. Cardinal Ruffo took part in the conclave 1799-1800 , where he is said to have played a key role in the election of Pope Pius VII . In 1800 he also took over the Santa Maria diaconia in Cosmedin . In 1801 he accepted Napoleonic rule over Naples and was a minister for a short time. In 1810 he attended the marriage of Napoléon Bonaparte and Marie-Louise of Austria . In 1814 he returned to Naples and restored his residence there. From 1821 until his death he was cardinal protodeacon . Also in 1821 he took over the titular diaconia Santa Maria in Via Lata .

He again took part in the conclave of 1823 , which Pope Leo XII. he chose. As cardinal protodeacon, he also directed the coronation of the new pope.

Cardinal Ruffo was Honorary and Devotion Grand Cross Bailli of the Sovereign Order of Malta and from 1817 to 1827 Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome of the Order of Malta.

The cardinals Antonio Maria Ruffo , Luigi Ruffo Scilla and Fulco Luigi Ruffo-Scilla came from the same sex as Ruffo .
