content

Lucky Luke rides to Painful Gulch, where he becomes embroiled in the quarrels between the O'Timmins (big red noses) and O'Hara (big big ears) family clans, who have long hatred for each other, but the reasons for it are not yet known are. Since both groups shoot very badly, they did not decimate each other, but caused significant damage in the city. Lucky Luke speaks to the two families at the mayor's request, but this is unsuccessful. So the two families blow up a bridge and the post office. When Lucky Luke wants to leave the area again, the bridge he is riding over is blown up, which is why he rides back furiously. Since he said that as mayor he would quickly force the two families to order, he was given his office by the mayor. Soon after, he is planning a city festival at which the city residents will take turns to let the members of the two families win in order to reconcile them. The party goes as expected, but reconciliation still fails, instead a fight breaks out. Now Lucky Luke feels personally affected and angry about the relentless behavior of the two families. He has a straw rent built and hangs a sign on it that reads "Property of the O'Haras" (or "O'Timmins"), thus catching a member of the two families he is imprisoning. Both clans then want to free their members, but instead begin a fight. Under the pretext of possessing a dynamite package (which, as it later turns out, only contains Lucky Luke's lunch), he forces all clan members to go to jail. He then discusses the release with the heads of families, who are still free, on condition that the hostility be ended. The heads of families want to refuse both, but are forced by the women of the families to end the hostility. Lucky Luke then releases all clan members and sets a fire on the O'Haras farm, as only the O'Timmins have a river with extinguishing water. The two families are forced by the women to offer or accept help, so that there is general reconciliation. Lucky Luke has thus restored peace in Painful Gulch and is riding away.

Remarks

"Family War in Painful Gulch" is the first band officially signed by Goscinny.

The story is based on the historic Hatfield-McCoy feud .

The cover picture shows an O'Timmins who is roughly thrown from his horse at a rodeo. Behind it, an O'Hara laughs with a pair of scissors that have been used to cut the saddle girth . Originally another cover picture was planned for the band, showing a shootout and an alcohol bottle, but it was felt to be unsuitable.
