action

The Senate of the United States commissioned Lucky Luke, four scientists in the west, across the Black Hills (dt .: Black Mountains) to accompany, so that they can write a report there to explain whether the area of Wyoming suitable for colonization. Only Senator Stormwind is against it, as this represents suicide, because Wild Indians would live there. He also immediately orders the dodgy Bull Bullets to do everything possible to prevent the expedition from arriving at all and becoming a success.

The four scientists that Luke is supposed to accompany are unfortunately completely clueless as to the dangers of the West. You can also hardly stand on the back of a mount, which always creates strange situations. To do this, they examine everything that comes between their fingers very carefully.

Already on the first stage, the train to Des Moines ( Iowa ), Bullets is trying to stir up trouble. He persuades the scientists to play a game of poker that they have no idea of either. They should be kicked off the train immediately because they have way too many aces in hand. At the last moment, Luke can prevent the train from continuing without her. In the next town, however, Bullets steals the train, so that Luke also hijacks a replacement train to take up the chase. Nevertheless, Bullets is first in Des Moines and buys all the carriages and horses there. Lucky Luke's group only has to continue the journey in the undertaker's car, which creates some strange situations.

In Omaha, Bullets has hired the Nebraska Kid, a killer to make short work of it. That goes wrong, however, because the scientist he challenges wants to fight the duel with the foil . As a former student , he can actually handle it and defeats his opponent. Further attack attempts by bullets are foiled mainly by chance.

In the Indian region beyond the Black Mountains, the scientists begin their investigations. While Luke goes hunting, they are kidnapped by Indians. To put Luke on their trail, they lay a trail, like in the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel , which he can easily follow. He finds them tied to torture stakes, but still clueless about what is happening to them - they are far too interested in these exciting foreign customs.

Lucky Luke is able to free the scientists and take the chief's son with him. This explains that Bull Bullets sold the Indians firewater to make them compliant. As proof that his firewater is not poison, the bullets caught drinking a bottle himself. Of course, he can't win the subsequent fight against Luke like this. Bullets admits that he and Senator Stormwind sold the booze and rifles to the Indians and that they now fear for their business.

In their report, the scientists finally judge that the area is well suited for settlement. Stormwind and Bullets end up in jail, and Luke rides off into the sunset.
