On the trail of the Daltons (French: Sur la piste des Dalton ) is an album from the Lucky Luke comic series . It was drawn by Morris and written by René Goscinny and first appeared in 1960. The prison dog Rantanplan made his first appearance in this story .

The Daltons broke out of prison. The prison guards, along with the stupid prison dog, Rantanplan, try to persecute him. Since the Daltons have stolen horses, Lucky Luke takes on the task. A carriage is also stolen and fear and horror spread in the villages. In the village of "Rightful Bend", Lucky Luke catches the leader Joe. Since the rest of the gang later get hold of Lucky Luke, they consider an exchange of prisoners. Lucky Luke can finally put the gang running around in a barn.

The story was first published in Spirou magazine in 1960 and as an album on Dupuis in 1962 .

It was published in German in 1967 as Fix and Foxi Super Tip Top , in 1972 in Primo and in 1978 in Zack . In 1980 the story was released as an album by Ehapa (volume 23).

The story was filmed for the Lucky Luke animated series in 1984 .
