The single Ma Dalton lives in the town of Cactus Junction . After Lucky Luke helped her briefly, the imprisoned Daltons get so enraged that they immediately dare to break out of prison to kill Lucky Luke. Ma Dalton happily greets her darling Averell at the family gathering. The other Daltons want to impress their mother with all kinds of raids, but Ma Dalton wants to keep the upper hand himself. There are now numerous raids. Lucky Luke is cleverly able to capture three Daltons. The fourth, Joe, almost caught Lucky Luke by surprise, but in a prison fire he loses control while Ma Dalton escapes.

The story was first printed in Pilote in 1971 and then as an album by Dargaud .
In Germany, the album was first published in 1972/1973 in Zack magazine and then as ZACK album No. 7 as Lucky Luke and Ma Daltons clean fruits . Since 1986 the band has been published by Egmont Ehapa Media as No. 47 in the series.
The story was filmed for the Lucky Luke animated series in 1983 .
