Fang Fang Kullander (* as Fang Fang on November 14, 1962 in Beijing ; † May 19, 2010 in Huddinge , Sweden ) was a Chinese ichthyologist .

Career

Fang Fang grew up as the second daughter of a geologist with two sisters in Beijing. In 1980 she began studying at the Zhanjiang Fisheries College in Zhanjiang , Guangdong Province , which has now been merged into the Guangdong Ocean University . Fang graduated in 1984 with a thesis on the anatomy of the African catfish prey for Bachelor . She then moved to Hebei University and graduated in 1987 through the development of Lenok ( Brachymystax lenok ) for a Master of Science degree . From 1987 to 1993 she worked as an assistant and lecturer in vertebrate biology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing . In October 1992 she began a three-month guest stay at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in Stockholm , which included the scientific processing of a large collection of freshwater fish from Sri Lanka . Her work in Stockholm eventually led to a doctoral degree at Stockholm University , which she began in 1993. In 1996 she got a full-time position at the university, which enabled her to work on a revision of the genus Danio . Her dissertation from 2001 dealt with the phylogeny and the biodiversity of this genus, which is native to the south and southeast of Asia.

Following her doctorate, Fang worked from 2001 to 2003 as part of the ECOCARP project funded by the European Union . Its aim was to identify and research species of carp that are suitable for aquaculture in China. In 2003, Fang joined the Swedish team at FishBase as a curator , which is based at Naturhistoriska riksmuseet. Together with her husband, the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander , Fang continued to study the systematics of the danios . Fang wrote a number of initial descriptions , either alone or together with Kullander and other ichthyologists , almost exclusively danios of different genera.

Fang had a son from his first marriage, whom she brought to Stockholm in 1994. She married Sven O. Kullander in February 1995, keeping her family name as an intermediate name. Her publications continued to appear mostly under the name of Fang Fang . In April 1999, Fang's second son was born. Fang was a trained singer and co-founder of the Chinese Choir in Stockholm. She took an active part in the cultural life of the Chinese community in Sweden and wrote short stories in Chinese. In June 2009, Fang was diagnosed with bile duct cancer that had already metastasized . She died in May 2010 in a hospice near Stockholm.
