Independent FilmFest Osnabrück
The Independent FilmFest Osnabrück (formerly the Days of Independent Film ) is one of the oldest and most traditional film festivals in Lower Saxony . It takes place every year on five days in October in Osnabrück . The festival is run by the non-profit Osnabrücker FilmForum e. V. aligned. Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil was the patron of the 30th FilmFest. It took place from October 7th to 11th, 2015.
history
Since it was founded in 1986 under the name “ Days of Independent Film ”, the FilmFest has committed itself to committed and innovative film. The main idea of the film festival is to promote tolerance between nations and in society. It works with numerous organizations such as the international child rights organization terre des hommes .
In 2001 the film festival was given a stronger socio-political orientation and since then has been called the “Independent FilmFest Osnabrück” .
Main topics
From 2006 to 2011, the film festival selected cross-section main themes under which the festival was organized. This enabled a filmic examination of the respective main topic and extensive discussions.

Awards
Peace film prize of the city of Osnabrück
The Peace Film Prize is awarded to a feature film or documentary that combines its aesthetic quality in an outstanding way with human thinking and social commitment. The prize is currently endowed with 15,000 euros (until 2018: 12,500 euros) and was initially donated by the VR Foundation of the Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken in Northern Germany and the Volksbank Osnabrück eG. The Sievert Foundation for Science and Culture has been donating the Peace Film Prize of the City of Osnabrück since 2013 .
The underlying concept of peace encompasses the entire range from international conflicts to social disputes and family problems. In particular, contributions to the following topics will be selected:
- Migration : displacement , asylum , exile
- International conflicts
- Development policy and environmental policy
- Human rights and freedoms
- Peace policy , peace research
A three-person jury of experts selects the winner. The jury is made up of well-known representatives from the film industry, peace work and journalism. The Peace Film Prize will be presented at an award ceremony at the end of the FilmFest.

Film award for children's rights
The film prize for children's rights is awarded to a feature or documentary film that deals in an outstanding and committed manner with the situation of children and their rights in the world.
Four films each will be selected for the competition. They address the social, economic and cultural living conditions of children in developing and industrialized nations and convey them in an informative and exciting way. The spectrum ranges from the implementation of the fundamental rights to education, health and housing, to protection against exploitation and violence, to the right of children to information, freedom of expression and the representation of their interests. In terms of content, KinderUNRecht is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child signed by 191 countries.
The prize is endowed with 2,000 euros and is donated by the Department of Children, Youth and Families of the City of Osnabrück. A five-person student jury, each 14 years old, determines the winner.

Short film award
The short film prize honors international short films. The prize is endowed with 500 euros and is donated by the Studentenwerk of the University of Osnabrück . Since 2018, a short film award endowed with 1,500 euros has also been awarded by a student jury.

Ernst Weber Film Prize
The Ernst Weber Film Prize for Solidarity was awarded from 2010 to 2012 to a film that specifically addresses food for thought or visions for the participation of all people in society, regardless of their national or social origin. The prize donated by the Ernst Weber Fund was endowed with 1,000 euros.

Film award for moral courage
The film prize for moral courage was endowed with 1,000 euros and was donated by the district of Osnabrück . Between 2010 and 2014, the prize was awarded to a short film that particularly emphasized the importance of moral courage for society. Pupils from secondary level II and vocational schools from the Osnabrück district could apply for the jury.

Europe Unlimited
In three current and retrospective programs, the FilmFest is devoted to various aspects of European unification as well as the bridging function of the film medium between “old and new Europeans”. The cultural integration of Europe with its political, economic and social implications is to be critically monitored.
Vistas Latinas
Since 2009 the FilmFest Osnabrück has also dedicated itself to contemporary Latin American film with the section “Vistas Latinas”. The focus is on socio-politically committed films that deal with the social, economic and political transformations in Latin America . No prize is currently awarded in this section.
FilmFest Extreme
The FilmFest Osnabrück has been showing selected genre films from the fields of horror, thriller and science fiction since 2013. No prize is currently awarded in this section.
Framework and special programs
Other film-related events will take place before and during the film festival. These include u. a .:
- The cinematological city tour A Wall is a Screen , in which short films are projected onto large areas of public space during a tour.
- The "secret cinema", in which private living rooms are transformed into small cinemas.
- Silent film concerts
- The "KinoImBiss" - a cinematic and culinary journey of discovery through selected catering establishments

The film festival takes place every year at the same five festival locations in Osnabrück:

However, the number of venues is constantly increasing due to the supporting programs.
