Finnbreeze

The six ro-ro cargo ships of the Finnbreeze class and two largely identical units of the Finnmill type are operated by the Finnish shipping company Finnlines . In addition, four ships of the same type of the MSG-113 class were built for the Stockholm shipping company Ellingsen Ship Management.

history

The ships were built at the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, part of the Chinese China Chang Jiang National Shipping Group Corporation. The original ship design was constructed as a Finnmill type on the initiative of the Nordic Forest Terminals. The first two units were delivered in 2002 and were put on long-term charter by Finnlines. In 2005 Nordic Forest Terminals ordered another four ships of the type, which were delivered between 2008 and 2010 and were in a ten-year charter for the Danish DFDS Tor Line. The ships then switched to Transfennica between 2018 and 2020 .

In addition, on August 24, 2007 Finnlines ordered six more units of a slightly revised variant from Jinling and in 2008 also took over the first two units that were initially chartered.

All twelve ships are mainly used on various Northern European RoRo freight services.

Fire of the Hafnia Seaways off Spiekeroog

The Hafnia Seaways as Tor Hafnia

In the early evening of October 19, 2011 , a fire broke out in the sauna of the Hafnia Seaways , which was north of Spiekeroog on the way from Immingham to Cuxhaven , which could not be extinguished with on-board resources.

The rescue cruiser Hermann Marwede , the emergency tug Nordic and the fishing protection boat Seefalke came to the rescue. The Havariekommando , the coordinated use of the auxiliary, further sent to a Seaking helicopter of the German navy firefighters the volunteer fire Brunsbuttel on board.

After the fire could be extinguished, the ship continued its voyage to Cuxhaven, during which it was accompanied by the rescue cruiser Hermann Marwede for safety .

On board the ship were 27 people, 20 crew members and seven passengers. Four passengers and two crew members were examined in the hospital in Cuxhaven because they had inhaled smoke gas.

Extension of six ships

In April 2017, Finnlines agreed with the Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk to extend four ships of the class by 29 meters to 217.40 meters. The extension of two more ships was optionally agreed. The extension increased the gauge to 4,213 meters. The Finntide was the first ship to be converted from September 26, 2017 to November 23, 2017. The Finnwave was extended from November 28, 2017 to January 2018. The Finnsky was extended from February 4, 2018 to the end of March 2018. The Finnsun was the last ship to be extended from April 4, 2018 to May 2018 . In March 2018, the conversion of two further ships, the Finnbreeze and Finnsea, was agreed. The renovations took place between September and December 2018. From September 15, 2018, the Finnbreeze was extended. From November 5, 2018, the Finnsea was extended.

technology

The approximately 187 meter long and 26.5 meter wide type of ship is designed as a multi-purpose RoRo cargo ship with a deckhouse in the front and a long, middle cargo hold . The ships are designed for the transport of trucks, paper products and containers. They have four roll decks with 3178 loading meters for the transport of trucks. The container capacity is 470  TEU . In addition to the 16 to 20-person crew, there is accommodation for 12 truck drivers or passengers. The ships are equipped with two electro-hydraulic RoRo ramps attached aft. The weather deck of the first two units was initially separated from the RoRo cargo hold and could only be loaded and unloaded using the LoLo method . In 2009, the two ships were adapted to the layout of the ships built later by installing movable roller decks above the main deck and a connection between the cargo hold and the weather deck.

The drive of the first two ships consists of two MAN-B&W eight- cylinder four - stroke diesel engines of the type 8L48 / 60 with a total output of 12,600 kW. For the following four units, two units of the larger twelve-cylinder engine type 12L48 / 60B with a total of around 19,200 kW were used. Two Wärtsilä eight-cylinder engines of the type 8L46F with a total output of 20,000 kilowatts were installed in the later Finnlines units . The motors act on two controllable pitch propellers and enable speeds of up to 20 and 21 knots respectively . The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster . The closed forecastle is particularly striking.
