The flag of Andorra is a tricolor that consists of three vertical stripes in blue, yellow and red. The middle stripe bears the coat of arms of Andorra .
description
The width of the three stripes of the Andorran flag is in a ratio of 8: 9: 8, that is, the middle (yellow) stripe is slightly wider than the two outer ones. The colors blue and red of the Andorran flag are two colors of the French flag, red and yellow are the Spanish colors. In the coat of arms in the upper left quarter is the miter and shepherd's crook of the Bishop of Urgell , the three red stakes in the upper right stand for the Counts of Foix , the four stakes in the lower left for Catalonia and the cows in the fourth quarter stand for the Counts of Béarn . The Latin saying means " United is virtue stronger ".
Only the national flag bears the coat of arms, the civil flag can do without a coat of arms. The aspect ratio of 7:10 is rather unusual for national flags.

history
The flag of Catalonia was used in Andorra until 1806 , as the Bishop of Urgell was subject to the Catalan ruler.
The first known flag of Andorra was introduced in 1806 and was derived from the flag of the Counts of Foix . It was a yellow-red flag split vertically.
Presumably since 1866, a horizontal tricolor in red-yellow-blue with a crown in a yellow stripe was used. The vertical version was used from 1939 at the latest, possibly even earlier, parallel to the horizontal flag. The coat of arms on the flag has changed little since then. The flag was not officially confirmed until June 20, 1996 by the assembly of the Consell General de les Valls ( General Council of the Valleys ).
According to a legend, the coat of arms was only introduced into the national flag when citizens of Chad kept coming to the permanent representation of Andorra in Paris . However, Andorra has had the coat of arms in its national flag since 1939, when Chad did not even exist. The background to the legend was that the Andorran administrator in Paris had the civic flag hoisted on the building, as was the custom in Andorra. Only after a lively visit from the citizens of Chad did he request the official flag from home.
The flag of Chad has just a different format than the Andorran Civic flag. It is the same with the flag of Romania , which uses a slightly different shade for the blue stripe. The flag of the Republic of Moldova also has the national coat of arms in the yellow stripe and is the only cultural flag that has a relationship to one of the other three, namely that of Romania.

The different municipalities ( valleys ) have their own coat of arms in the tricolor, there are also reports of a flag of the capital Andorra la Vella , which is derived from its coat of arms.
