Flawed Design is the second studio album of Canadian alternative metal / post-grunge - band Saint Asonia . It was released on October 25, 2019 via Spinefarm Records .

Emergence

The first new songs were written after the self-titled debut album was released in 2015. Sometimes older song ideas were used for the album. For example, the first single The Hunted was created before the first album was released. The song was written by guitarist Mike Mushok and Godsmack singer Sully Erna and was to be used for a soundtrack first. The song was later to be released on the debut album, but this did not happen.

In the summer of 2017, the drummer Rich Beddoe left the band and was replaced by Sal Giancarelli from the band Staind . A year later, bassist Corey Lowery left Saint Asonia to join the band Seether . His successor was Cale Gontier from the band Art of Dying , who is also the cousin of the singer Adam Gontier. Saint Asonia changed record labels and signed a new contract with Spinefarm Records .

In early 2019, work began on the second studio album, which was produced and mixed by Brian Sperber . The drums were recorded in a Connecticut studio and the rest in Brian Sperber's studio. Sharon den Adel from the band Within Temptation and Dustin Bates from the band Starset also appeared as guest vocalists alongside Sully Erna . Some songs were written by outside songwriters. So the basis of the song Sirens was written by Stevie Aiello ( Thirty Seconds to Mars ) and Dustin Bates. For the song The Hunted one was music video rotated.

With the album title, Adam Gontier wants to express that every person obviously has his or her faults and weaknesses. In his opinion, many people struggle to accept these flaws and weaknesses and live a life as a real person. He takes himself as an example for this. For inspiration, Gontier did a lot of research in advance on social media such as Instagram .

"It looks like a lot of people are trying to be someone they are not and I get the impression that society wants to be perfect and is always trying to live perfectly."

- Adam Gontier

In The Hunted is about the struggle to find his place in life. Furthermore, according to Adam Gontier, the song is a solid representation of the direction his band will take in the future. This August Day is about the day in August 2017 that Adam Gontier's son was born. That same day, Gontier ended up in the emergency room of a rehab in Nashville .

“Not being there when my son was born is something I will regret for the rest of my life. But I didn't have a choice. It's about the day in August that completely changed me. "

- Adam Gontier

The song The Fallen is for Adam Gontier a tribute to late singer like Chris Cornell of the band Soundgarden or Chester Bennington of the band Linkin Park .

Reviews

For Andreas Schiffmann from the online magazine Musikreviews.de , Flawed Design offers “standard US wide-screen rock without any irony”. The band puts "a handful of really catchy tunes up for discussion". But if you “don't like melodrama, you should keep your distance from the group”. Schiffmann awarded ten out of 15 points. According to Bianca Härtzsch from the German magazine Metal Hammer , the album offers "a broad musical spectrum at a moderate pace, moving, emotional singing and instrumental parts as well as profound songs that speak from the heart and make you think". Härtzsch awarded 5.5 out of seven points. Conny Schiffbauer from the German magazine Rock Hard was more critical . The album would have "turned out to be too nice and arbitrary in its overall impression". The music would “ rush out of the box ” “well produced, arranged and composed ”, but the music would not “get stuck in the ear”. Schiffbauer awarded seven out of ten points and described the album as "off the shelf goods at a high level".
