Florian Menz (born September 12, 1994 in Schmalkalden ) is a former German ski jumper .

Career

Florian Menz grew up in Steinbach-Hallenberg . He has been active in the Steinbach-Hallenberg ski club since 2001. Here he is supported by the former ski jumper Ralph Gebstedt . Since 2005 he has been attending the Oberhof sports high school . His international career began at the age of 13 when he started jumping at international FIS races in Zakopane and Baiersbronn in 2008 . In 2009 and 2010 Menz started several times in the Alpencup . There he achieved placements around 30th place. In 2009, he secured the student championship title with two double victories in the student cup in Ruhpolding and Rastbüchl .

Menz took part in the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 in Liberec. There he reached 10th place in the individual competition as the best German participant. The German ski jumping team won the bronze medal in team jumping. The Nordic Ski Games of the OPA in Baiersbronn used Menz to win his first international individual medal. He took 3rd place.

In the 2011/2012 season, Menz built on his continuous improvement in performance. He took 2nd place in Szczyrk, Poland, and 5th place in the FIS Cup . In February he was promoted to the Continental Cup for the first time . There he immediately took 17th and 26th place in Oslo, Norway . As a result, Menz was appointed to the DSV's C-team for the coming season .

Florian took part in the 2012/2013 season in Lillehammer , Chaikovsky and Klingenthal . At the same time he continued to contest Alpine Cups and reached eighth place in Seefeld in Tyrol, sixth place in Planica and 2nd place in Kranj . The highlight of the season happened not far from his home, in Brotterode , Thuringia , when Menz achieved his best result in the Continental Cup with 15th place. With 16th place in the COC in Wisla , Poland , Menz once again attracted attention. He finished the winter season with 29th place in the COC in Liberec .

Menz suffered a setback in the 2013/2014 season. He fell during a summer course in Courchevel, France and had to fight injuries for a long time. Menz is a member of the B2 team of the DSV.

In June 2014 Menz passed his Abitur at the Oberhof sports high school and since September he has been a member of the Bundeswehr sports promotion group in Oberhof. The 2014/2015 season got off to a successful start for Menz. He was able to take the lead in the overall ranking of the German Cup in August with a double victory in Berchtesgaden and in September with a second place in Oberstdorf . Shortly after his 20th birthday, he achieved another success on an international level with 8th and 9th place in the FIS Cup in Planica. Menz was unable to take this upswing into winter. In the Fis Cup series he could no longer jump into the top 30, so he had to prove himself again nationally. Menz got in shape in time to take part in his season highlight, the Winter Universiade in Štrbské Pleso . In a men's field with World Cup experience, Menz reached the second round in 29th place, with the German student team he was fourth. Menz completed his last competition as part of the German Cup in Oberstdorf, Germany.

Menz began studying medicine in October 2015. After passing the first section of the medical exam in summer 2017, he is now in his 8th semester and is part of a research group at the Jena University Hospital. Due to his academic achievements, he was included in the preselection for the Samuel Hyde Memorial Prize, which is intended to promote promising young scientists.
