history
The airport was completed in 1981. Zvartnots is famous for the ruins of a palace church from the 7th century. The airport system takes up the round shape of the church.
In December 2001, a concession agreement was signed between the government of the Republic of Armenia and the holding company Corporación América, which belongs to the Argentine businessman Eduardo Eurnekian of Armenian descent, to operate the airports of Yerevan and Gyumri for 30 years. For this purpose, the operating company Armenia International Airports CJSC was founded in June 2002 and commissioned with the management.
In 2004 the construction of a new terminal began. The arrival hall of the new terminal was opened in autumn 2006, the departure hall in summer 2007.
The airport was the hub for the Armenian flag carrier Armavia and Air Armenia .
