The Ponta Delgada Airport ( Portuguese Aeroporto João Paulo II , named after Pope John Paul II.) Is located near the city of Ponta Delgada on the main island of São Miguel to be Portugal belonging Azores and is ANA operated. It is the largest airport in the Azores and received a new terminal in 1995. The airlines SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines , based in the Azores, have their headquarters here and operate a number of regional routes as well as scheduled and charter flights to North America and Europe from here. Also TUI Airlines Nederland offer flights to Ponta Delgada. In Germany, SATA International flies to Frankfurt and Munich. The Irish airline Ryanair also connects Ponta Delgada and Frankfurt.

Incidents

  • On October 22, 1995 crashed Transall C-160 of the Air Force . The aircraft with the registration number 50 + 43 of Lufttransportgeschwader 61 was on its way to the United States of America. The aircraft landed in Ponta Delgada to refuel before it was supposed to fly on to St. John's ( Newfoundland , Canada). After an unsuccessful abortion due to an engine failure, she touched a high-voltage pylon and fell into the sea. All seven crew members were killed.
