description

The green forsythia grows as an upright shrub and reaches heights of up to 3 meters. The branches are bare, stiff, square and olive-green to yellow-green. The pith of the branches is chambered. The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 6 to 12 millimeters long and glabrous. The simple leaf blade is dark green, 3.5 to 15 centimeters long, 1 to 4 centimeters wide, oblong elliptical, lanceolate or long obovate, elliptical, pointed with a wedge-shaped base and continuously or partially serrated leaf margin.

The flowers are solitary, in twos or threes, rarely four in the leaf axils on 3 to 7 millimeter long stems. The calyx is 2.5 centimeters long and 2 to 4 millimeters long, broadly egg-shaped or oval, ciliate calyx tips. The corolla is deep yellow on the outside and shows yellow-orange stripes on the inside. The corolla tube is 5 to 6 millimeters long, the narrow elongated corolla lobes 0.6 to 1.8 centimeters. The pistil is 5.5 to 7 millimeters long in flowers with 3.5 to 5 millimeter long stamens , about 3 millimeters long in flowers with 6 to 7 millimeter long stamens. The capsule fruit is 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and 6 to 10 millimeters wide, egg-shaped and covered with cork pores . The green forsythia blooms from March to April, the fruits ripen from August to November.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.
