Francesco Onofrio (Giovanni Romulo) Manfredini (also cited as Francesco Maria Manfredini; born  June 22, 1684 in Pistoia near Florence ; †  October 6, 1762 ibid) was an Italian violinist and composer of the late Baroque .

Life

Francesco Manfredini was the son of Domenico, a trombone player in the cathedral of Pistoia , and thus came from a family of musicians. He probably received his first music lessons from the conductor in his hometown Sebastiano Cherici (1647–1704). At a very young age he moved to Bologna to enter the famous music school of the Cathedral of San Petronio as a choirboy and student . His teachers were Giuseppe Torelli (violin), Giacomo Antonio Perti (counterpoint and composition) and Girolamo Nicolò Laurenti (1678–1751).

After this time he had a position as violinist at the Church of Santo Spirito in Ferrara , probably due to the temporary dissolution of the cappella musicale of San Petronio in 1696. After the reorganization of the San Petronio Chapel in 1703, Manfredini received a position as Violinist ( suonatore ) and became a member of the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica .

On the occasion of a stay in Venice in 1711 he made the acquaintance of Prince Antonio I Grimaldi of Monaco , in whose service he was Kapellmeister for sixteen years. In 1718 he dedicated his Concerti op.3 to the prince .

In 1727 Manfredini moved back to his native Pistoia, where he was maestro di cappella ( Kapellmeister ) at the Cathedral of San Filippo until his death .

Manfredini was married to Rosa degli Antonii and the couple had eleven children, five of whom were born in Monaco. Three of his sons also became musicians: the violinist Antonio Manfredini, the castrato and composer Giuseppe Manfredini (who possibly worked in London from 1750) and the composer Vincenzo Manfredini (* 1737; † 1799 in Saint Petersburg).

Works

As Kapellmeister in Pistoia, Manfredini composed numerous vocal works for ecclesiastical use, which were available as manuscripts. After disputes with the clergy, Manfredini was instructed to remove his works from the music cabinet. So only the printed works remained from him. In 1917 it was mentioned that the music for the oratorios had been preserved, but it has not yet been found.
