Francis Shepherd

Sir Francis Michie Shepherd (born January 6, 1893 - May 15, 1962 ) was a British ambassador .

Life

Francis Shepherd attended Oakfield School, University College School and the University of Grenoble . In August 1914 he joined the London Scottish Regiment, in April 1915 he switched to the 7th Division, which was used in Merville in France. In December 1915 he was transferred to Mesopotamia , where Charles Vere Ferrer's Townshend was locked in Kut . Shepherd was used in British India and in 1919 in the Waziristan Campaign (1919-1920).

In 1920 he entered the foreign service and was posted to the consulates in San Francisco , Buenos Aires , Lima , Antwerp and from 1927 to 1932 in Hamburg . From 1932 he was chargé d'affaires in Port-au-Prince , Haiti and San Salvador . In 1932 he was inducted into the Order of the British Empire , in 1942 he became an officer and in 1948 a commander. From 1935 to 1937 he was Minister Resident and Consul in Port-au-Prince. During the Spanish Civil War he was consul general in Barcelona for three months in 1938 and then went to Dresden as consul until 1939 . From July to August 1939 he was then consul general in the free city of Danzig . After the start of the war he was employed in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from October 1939 to February 1940 .

He was Legation Councilor and Consul General in Reykjavík , Iceland (1940-1942) and then Legation Councilor in Leopoldville , Belgian Congo . From 1944 to 1947 he was the representative of the British government in Finland and from 1947 to 1949 Consul General in the Dutch East Indies . Shepherd was ambassador to Tehran , Persia for two years (1950 to 1952) . When the nationalization of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company was being discussed, he protested against a sabotage law in parliament, which stipulated that damage to facilities in the oil industry would be punishable by death. In late July 1951, he met with Henry F. Grady and W. Averell Harriman . From 1952 to 1954 he was ambassador to Warsaw , Poland, after which he was retired . In 1960 he married Barbara Bayntun Fairbairn-Crawford.
