Frankenstein's Tante is a television series from 1986. It was created as a co-production by Austria , Germany , France , Spain , Italy , Sweden and Czechoslovakia and is based on the novel of the same name by Allan Rune Pettersson .

In the TV series, Hanna Frankenstein goes to Frankenstein, but, unlike in the novel, initially more with the aim of finding a bride for Henry Frankenstein so that “the little Frankenstein family can join”. But he is busy with his latest invention, the creation of a human being with the brain of a genius and the power of a machine. In contrast to the book by Allan Rune Pettersson, the baroness encounters even more ghost figures, including a Aquarius , a Fire Spirit , a Hanged Man, a Ghost and the White Woman . Here she also meets the orphan Max, who ran away from the circus.

  • The cast of the series is very international, which is also due to the participation of seven countries in the production, so that the Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko spoke of a Babylonian language diversity when shooting.
  • The film is a co-production by Taurus Film Munich, MR-Film (Austria), Československá televízia Bratislava (Czechoslovakia) and Films du Saber (France) in collaboration with SVT 1 (Sweden), Raiuno (Italy), FR-3 ( France) and TVE (Spain).
  • The producers also wanted haunted characters from many different cultures so that the series would be well received around the world.
  • The shooting locations included Hallstatt , the area around Salzburg , the Dachstein Mountains , Boskovice , Werfen with the Hohenwerfen fortress and Manínska tiesňava .
  • The makers of the film adaptation of "Frankenstein's Tante" , Jaroslav Dietl and Juraj Jakubisko, interpreted the classic motif of Frankenstein with humor that tends to be parody, but wanted not only to entertain the audience, but also their conviction in the victory of humanity and des Expressing common sense about human aggressiveness and intolerance.

Alternative titles and versions

  • The series initially had the working title Vnuk Frankensteinovej tety ( The grandson of Frankenstein's aunt ). But since Max is not related to Frankenstein's aunt , the title was shortened to Frankensteinova teta ( Frankenstein's aunt ). In Slovakia the series was even only broadcast under Teta ( aunt ).
  • In France, the series ran in 13 parts of 25 minutes each under the name La tante de Frankenstein .
  • Other titles are: Frankenstein's Aunt (English) and La Tia de Frankenstei " alternatively Los Monstruos de Transilvania (Spain).
  • There is also a compilation of the series into a 96-minute amphibious film with the title Freckled Max and the Spooks (original title: Pehavý Max a strasidlá ).

Soundtrack

The title song Two dreams long , produced by Oliver Onions , appeared in 1987 as a 7 "single for Teldec (6.14792 AC) and included the instrumental version as a B-side . Performer was Kieran Hilbert , who along with his brother Lukas Hilbert that of Udo Lindenberg produced duo Hauden & Lukas formed and the song Fantasy used in the series was originally written by Oliver Onions for the film The Bomber .

DVD release

Frankenstein's Aunt was first released on DVD in Germany on March 17, 2008. The seven-part series was published on three DVDs with a total running time of 364 minutes of 52 minutes per episode.

The new rights holder Renaissance Medien brought the box in a digipak in a restored version onto the market, both image and sound were reworked. The picture format is 4: 3 (full screen) and the sound is in Dolby Digital 2.0. The box is released from 12 years.

  • The role of the white woman in Frankenstein's aunt was inspired by Elisabeth Báthory (1560-1614). She is said to have tortured hundreds of girls to death and, according to legend, she was cursed to walk around her castle as a white woman. In the series, however, the role is softened, the similarities can still be seen in the same first name and some hints. Frankenstein's aunt's director Juraj Jakubisko also made a film about her called Bathory , which came out in 2008.
  • Frankenstein's Tant " was nominated for best film at the 1988 International Fantasy Film Award .
  • Ferdy Mayne, who plays Count Dracula in the series, had a similar role as Count Krolock in Dance of the Vampires in 1967 .
  • The series was first broadcast in the Czech Republic in 2003.
  • There is also an English-language musical based on the novel by Allan Rune Petterson, which is intended to be performed in schools.
  • The creatures that look like dwarfs with elephant heads without tusks are named Igorkos in the series and in Werner Meier's book. Igorko is the Slavic diminutive of Igor; Igorkos means as much as Igorleins.
