Franz Bernauer mainly created monumental sculptures, grave monuments, fountains, portrait busts and plaques.

His design for a Max Schneckenburger monument in Tuttlingen was awarded second place in a competition in 1888 and the design was purchased. According to the judgment of the Kunstchronik , the figure of a Germanic leaning on his stone ax was decidedly preferable to the victorious design by Adolf Jahn from an artistic point of view ; Nevertheless, Jahn's design of a Germania figure was realized.

His main work is the Prinzregentenbrunnen (Luitpoldbrunnen) in Augsburg (1901–03). Bernauer also created the smaller Hubertusbrunnen in Schwalbach and the Germanenbrunnen at the Old Botanical Garden in Munich (1897). In 1907, at the art exhibition in the Munich Glass Palace, he presented the model of a Rübezahl fountain , the figure of which in Thieme-Becker was compared with works by Adolf von Hildebrand , whereas the fountain basin and the grating are reminiscent of Romanesque traditions.

He created busts of Prince Regent Luitpold and King Ludwig III for the Augsburg City Hall . from Bavaria , which have been copied a lot.
