Franz Weiser

Franz Weiser (born March 21, 1901 in Vienna as Franz Xaver Weiser ; † October 22, 1986 in Weston (Massachusetts) ) was an Austrian theologian and writer .

Life

Franz Weiser grew up in Bruck an der Leitha . He attended the Hollabrunn grammar school and the Kalksburg college . After graduating , he studied philosophy , theology and education as a member of the Jesuit order at the Berchmanskolleg in Pullach , at the University of Innsbruck and at the Marist College in Poughkeepsie ( New York ). He received his doctorate for doctor of theology, and in 1930 he received in Innsbruck the priesthood . Then he was in Vienna in the youth ministry operates and President of the Marian Congregation students in Austria. He edited the association magazine Our Flag , in which his first literary works appeared.

Franz Weiser was sent to the United States by his order in 1938 with the task of studying the history of the Jesuit mission in North America . He worked as curate and pastor of the German-speaking Holy Trinity German Catholic Church in Boston ( Massachusetts ). After the end of the Second World War , he was active in church relief work for Germany and Austria . From 1950, Weiser taught ethics and cultural history at Emmanuel College in Boston, from 1961 to 1966 he was professor of ethics at Boston College , and from 1966 to his retirement in 1971 he was professor of liturgical history there.

In addition to his work as a priest and theologian, Franz Weiser wrote an extensive literary work consisting of novels , stories , travelogues and plays . Much of his narrative work is about characters from the history of the Catholic Indian mission . Weiser's books for young people, Alfred's Secret and Light of the Mountains , were particularly successful and have been translated into numerous languages. Weiser also published a number of popular theological works in English in the United States , most notably The Christmas book being a sales success.
