Franz Zodl (born August 14, 1944 in Gumpoldskirchen , † September 18, 2010 in Vienna ) was an Austrian cook, gastronomy teacher, director of the hospitality college and ambassador of the Association of Austrian Chefs .

Life

After completing compulsory school, half-orphan Franz Zodl began an apprenticeship as a confectioner in 1958 at the Rötzer confectionery in Mödling. He then began an apprenticeship as a chef at the Hotel Sacher in 1961 , after two years he became a young chef, at the age of 25 he was the youngest chef de cuisine at the Sacher, then the youngest deputy chef, and in this position he ended his career at the Sacher in 1975. From 1967 he was also course director of the Gastronomic Institute for eleven years. At a young age he was offered international offers, but he did not feel ready and did not want to leave his mother alone. When he was offered the post of head chef at the Hotel Sacher, he got up and became head chef at the Club Hotel Baden near Vienna, where he only stayed for exactly one year. He lacked the flair of the city of Vienna. He then accepted the offer to teach a module as a contract teacher at the hotel management school with half a teaching commitment (around ten teaching hours). In addition, he passed the teaching examination to become a specialist teacher at vocational middle and high schools and in 1978 the license examination for the hospitality industry. In 1980 he was hired as a subject teacher. In order to make ends meet financially, he began to work as an evening kitchen chef in the Leupolds Kupferdachl restaurant , where he stayed for 16 years (until around 1993).

When the position of director became vacant in the renowned hospitality school of Viennese restaurateurs on Judenplatz (GaFa), he applied for it. In 1984 he became provisional director and the following year director of the school, which he remained until his retirement in 2009. There he created the specialty service, the advanced course for tourism and the private course in patisserie. Since 1983 he has been a lecturer in the preparatory course for the concession test for the hospitality industry at WIFI Vienna , since 1991 member of the examination committee and chairman of the final apprenticeship exams for chefs, since 1992 chairman of the examination committee for the final examination of hotel management students and for the same length of time lecturer at the Institute for Household and Nutritional Sciences, Since 1993 lecturer and leader of events for teacher training of the Federal Pedagogical Institute in Vienna and since 1995 leader and organizer of the master chef courses of the WIFI Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. With Jürgen Frank, he played a key role in the installation of the professional recipe competition Goldenes Reindl, which has been taking place since 1988 .

He was known beyond Austria's borders as an ambassador for Viennese and Austrian cuisine . This began when the Chamber of Commerce held an Austria Week in the Japanese department store Mitsukoshi in the mid-1980s . After his first appearance was almost a failure due to the cultural differences, he was informed about the local customs. In total, he drove to Japan 23 times and the President of the Tōkai University Members Club, one of the top addresses in Tokyo, once assured him full support. During the Austria and Vienna Weeks he was also a guest in Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Moscow, Cologne, Frankfurt and Washington in cooperation with WIFI, the Chamber of Commerce , the Federal Chamber and the Association of Austrian Chefs. At the Austrian millennium celebrations "1000 Years of Austria" in 1995 he was primarily responsible for the culinary sector. In the Johann Strauss year 1999, Zodl was a “cook model” for one year and wrote the menus for 85 Viennese restaurants, among other things.

In June 1991 he was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor of the Republic of Austria , in 1996 the professional title of Professor by the Federal Ministry for Education and Art as the first of his guild, in 2002 he was appointed Hofrat ( professional title ) and in 2007 he received the Golden Medal of Honor for services to the country Vienna . The Association of Austrian Chefs (VKÖ) elected Franz Zodl as its President in April 1998, which he remained for two terms until 2006. During his term of office in 2002, the association celebrated its 100th anniversary under the motto “The world cooks in Vienna”. Since 2006 he has been an ambassador for the Association of Austrian Chefs. He was also a board member of the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Austria (Conseiller Culinaire de Bailliage National d'Autriche, Vice Chargé de Mission du Billiage de Vienne).

From 1977 to 1985 he worked on the ORF show Häferlgucker and is one of the pioneers of Austrian television chefs alongside Helmuth Karl Misak and Josef Zauner . From 1986 he was a humorous cook in the senior citizens' club for 12 years . After he had already been on a tour of America as a soprano soloist with the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen and also wanted to become an actor, this vein was kissed awake with the television. First he sang the traditional final song of the senior citizens' club, then on Mardi Gras and Mother's Day programs and by chance there were appearances at matinees, the first with Elfriede Ott . Encouraged by friends, he also received acting lessons from a mentor. This was followed by his own matinees, where, depending on the event, he read, moderated and sang, including Viennese songs . In 2008, for example, he also made an appearance at the 45th Little Neubauer Opera Ball .

In his private life he lived with two male cats in Wieden near the Belvedere .

After his retirement he devoted himself to his hobby, the theater, and had the last premiere on September 10, 2010 in the play Die Gigerln von Wien in the Gloria-Theater in Vienna- Floridsdorf . During his performance on September 18, 2010, he passed out and died on stage.

Franz Zodl was buried on October 9, 2010 in the cemetery of Gumpoldskirchen with great sympathy.
