The Frauenkogel is 683  m above sea level. A. high hill in the western part of the Grazer Bergland in the Austrian state of Styria . It is located in the northwest of the provincial capital Graz on the border with the market town of Gratwein-Straßengel .

Location and surroundings

The Frauenkogel rises on the north-western edge of the Graz district of Gösting and is part of the Steinkogel-Frauenkogel train, which runs roughly east-west. It towers over the Gratkorner basin at Judendorf-Straßengel by around 300 m and the recidivism of the Kirchberg by Maria Straßengel by 230 m. Neighboring peaks are the Steinkogel and the Reinerspitze ( 710  m ). The not very prominent hill, which can be reached on hiking trails, should not be confused with the Frauenkogel near Gösting (also Frauenberg ), which is only 2.3 km south-east . It is part of the protected landscape area of the western mountain and hill country of Graz (LSG-39).

Geology and geomorphology

The Frauenkogel consists of Kanzelkalk and, like the rest of the ridge, belongs to the Rannach facies of the Graz Paleozoic Era . It forms the north-western corner of a karst covered area that extends between 680 and 700  m above sea level. A. extends. To the west and north, on the other hand, the wooded slopes drop steeply and provide a striking appearance from the Gratkorner basin area. A row of sinkholes called "Wassergspiel" separates the Frauenkogel from the Steinkogel, one of several Miocene cone karst peaks that tower above the level. At the northern end of the Wassergspiel there is a ponor of several insignificant watercourses that emerge from the slope debris . At the time of the hydrogeological survey in 1964, the area around the Ponor appeared to be heavily swamped , which was seen as a sign that the drainage of the terraced clay was blocked.

Rampart

As on the Frauenberg, there was a medieval defense ring on the Frauenkogel , which should have served as a refuge for women and children from the Straßengel area . As the toponym “Ochsengrube” in the forest map of the Counts Attems in Gösting suggests, pets and farm animals were also brought to safety in the vicinity . In 1892, the base of the Goldhannwarte was built from the boulders lying around . The wooden observation tower fell victim to a fire in 1908, the ruined foundation walls have been preserved to this day.
