Fred Evans (* 4. February 1991 in Cardiff ) is a Welsh professional boxer in the middleweight division . As an amateur, he became European welterweight champion in 2011 and also won the silver medal in this weight class at the 2012 Olympic Games .
Amateur career
Fred Evans boxed for St Joseph's ABC in Newport . In 2007 he was British featherweight cadet champion and also won the European Cadet Championships in Hungary the following month, defeating Clarence Goyeram , among others . He was also the last sixteen of the 2007 Cadet World Championships and the 2008 World Youth Championships .
In 2010 he won the welterweight Commonwealth Championships in India , where he could beat Rayton Okwiri and Callum Smith , among others . At the Commonwealth Games 2010, however, he was eliminated in the preliminary round with just 8: 8+ against Kennedy St-Pierre .
In 2011 he became Welsh welterweight champion and also won the 2011 European Championships in Ankara by beating Torben Keller from Denmark (17: 8), Araik Marutjan from Germany (13: 8), Islam Edisultanov from Russia (16:14), Hall Kwatschatadze from Georgia (20:16) and Mahamed Nurudsinau from Belarus (14: 9). His compatriot and friend Andrew Selby also won the flyweight title. It was the first Welsh European boxing gold medals in 86 years.
At the 2011 World Championships in Baku he reached the quarter-finals against New Zealander Ricky Murphy (21: 6), South Korean Ch'un-sik Kim (17: 8) and German Patrick Wojcicki (12: 6), where he stopped against Egidijus Kavaliauskas resigned. By reaching the quarter-finals, he was also qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London . There he defeated Egidijus Kavaliauskas (11: 7) in the round of 16 this time and moved into the quarter-finals, where he narrowly prevailed with +14: 14 against the Canadian Custio Clayton and reached the semi-finals. In this he defeated the reigning world champion Taras Schelestjuk from Ukraine (11:10) and thus reached the final, in which he was defeated by the Kazak Serik Säpijew with 9:17. Winning the silver medal made Evans the most successful Welsh boxer in Olympic sporting history and the country’s first Olympic medalist in boxing since Ralph Evans won bronze in 1972.
Professional career
In December 2015 he signed a professional contract with the UK promoter and management Sanigar Events of Chris Sanigar. He won his professional debut on May 26th 2017 against the Belgian Najim Fennane. In October 2018 he surprisingly lost to Ryan Toms (match record: 15-15).

His mother and sister died in a 2006 traffic accident near Cardiff.
In October 2014, he was involved in a brawl in Gloucestershire and tried for assault in Gloucester Crown Court, where he was sentenced to two years probation in October 2015. In April 2014, he was fined for participating in a brawl in Birmingham .
